About This Pub
Oh, let me tell you about The Lock Stock & Barrel in Newbury – it's one of those pubs that just hits the spot for a laid-back afternoon or evening by the canal. I love how they've blended that traditional charm with modern comforts, like the refurbished outdoor terrace that's perfect for soaking up the sun with a pint in hand. The food's a real highlight too; I tried the Fuller's battered fish and some garlic bread, and they were spot on – fresh and full of flavour. Plus, the staff are an absolute delight, always ready with a smile and quick to sort you out, especially with that handy app for ordering right from your table. But, and I have to be straight with you, the prices are a bit of a downer; you're looking at nearly £15 for two pints, which feels a touch extravagant for what it is. It's understandable given the prime location, but it might make you pause if you're planning a longer session. All in all, it's a solid choice for a special outing or when you fancy treating yourself, just keep an eye on the bill to make sure it doesn't dampen the fun.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The location by the canal is absolutely spot on – it's a lovely spot for a relaxing drink or meal, especially on a sunny day with that great roof terrace.
-
The staff are really friendly and attentive, making you feel welcome from the moment you walk in.
-
They've got some cracking food options, like the Fuller's battered fish and garlic bread, which come highly recommended for a tasty bite.
-
Ordering through the app is a nice touch – it's quick and efficient, so you can just sit back and enjoy your time without any fuss.
Cons
-
Drinks can be a bit pricey; for instance, two pints might set you back around £15, which feels steep even for a riverside spot.
-
Overall pricing seems on the high side, especially when compared to what you'd expect in a typical pub – it might make you think twice before ordering another round.
-
Some folks have mentioned it's getting busier, so you might find it a tad crowded on nicer days, which could spoil the relaxed vibe a little.

Nice pub on the canal next to a lock in Newbury, has a great roof terrace and is perfect for a nice sunny evening, only down side is the price of the drinks… 2 pints of Asahi £14.80!
A lovely spot with a great atmosphere, especially when the sun is shining. The service was excellent, and the staff were friendly and attentive.
However, I’ve given 3 stars due to the pricing, which I found to be quite steep—even higher than what you'd expect in central London. I completely understand the pressures of rising costs in the hospitality industry, including business rates and NI increases, but there’s a fine line between expensive and unreasonable.
We were charged £7.70 for a pint of Coke Zero, which was mostly ice with syrup and water. For two soft drinks, the bill came to nearly £15, which in a town like Newbury feels excessive. I hope the pricing is reviewed in the future, as it’s a lovely venue otherwise.

Lovely pub next to the river. Stopped in for a pint on a beautiful sunny day, it was fairly busy for an early Friday afternoon. Pint was nice, but a bit expensive - £15 for two pints is stretching it a bit.
However, would recommend if you're looking for a nice riverside pub for a few drinks.
Didn't get food but it looked and smelled good.
I wanted to visit this place due to the outdoors seating area. The service was friendly even when you order and pay through an app. We ordered a Fuller’s battered fish and a service of garlic bread with melted cheese and the bread was delicious. I recommend to visit this place and find an outdoor table.
Pub well set out with information and staff welcoming. Choice of indoor or outdoor seating. All ordering can be done from your table, and delivered quickly. A good experience.
Visited again recently and had a good meal.
