About This Pub

Ah, the Old Waggon & Horses – it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its charm, isn't it? From chatting with others who've been, the staff stand out as proper stars; they're helpful and create that welcoming feel that makes you want to linger. The atmosphere is spot on for a relaxed evening or catching a game, and that terrace by the canal is just lovely when the weather plays ball – imagine sipping a drink as the sun sets. On the downside, though, prices for drinks can sting a bit, leaving you wondering if it's worth the splurge, and there have been a few moans about remixed music or technical glitches that disrupt the flow. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're out and about in Newbury, but go in with your eyes open to get the best of it – the good bits make up for the niggles, in my book.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are really friendly and go the extra mile, like when the barman offered to get a special juice that wasn't in stock.
  • It's got a cracking atmosphere, perfect for watching the footy or just having a good chinwag with mates.
  • The terrace out the back overlooking the canal is an absolute delight, especially on a sunny evening when the sun's going down.
Cons
  • Drinks can be a tad pricey, with some folks mentioning hefty bills for a couple of pints or ciders.
  • Music choices might disappoint if you're after the originals, as they've been remixed in places.
  • There can be the odd hiccup, like audio cutting out during events or not having certain drinks available.

No Pineapple juice, although barman ( just one on duty) was prepared to get some. Watched Spurs game. Audio broke up a bit during 2nd half. Overall a good experience and I will return to watch the final in two weeks.

The drinks are very expensive , 2 Ciders for £14 . The music would have been good if it wasn't remixed not quite sure why the originals aren't played. When we went it was very busy which is good for the buisness I'm sure

Visited this establishment on my first night out in Newbury, taking my team out for a staff night out. Door staff were pleasant enough, atmosphere was good, despite being warned by many locals beforehand that it is a "rough" place where it regularly kicks off. All was well until I went to the bar and asked the female bar staff member, politely, "bacardi and coke with ice please". She proceeded to pour my drink but with no ice, when I then asked for ice, she turned to me and said, "please!" To which I responded, "I said please before, but please can I have ice?" She gave me such attitude and was so impolite and rude that I was left genuinely upset. The door staff seem genuinely nice, but the bar staff are extremely poor. To summarise, if you're a mature adult on a night out who expects to be treated as a customer, avoid this venue because their staff will treat you like a delinquent, irrelevant of how you actually compose yourself. Very poor experience.

Went the day after they reopened and nearly passed out that a double vodka and coke plus a single gin and lemonade was £15.20. Was doing a bit of a pub crawl and that was the most expensive place we went to for those two drinks. Toilets were a lot better than they used to be with the refurb though

We visited here while passing through Newbury the other day, and we're so glad we did as the staff were so friendly, pub atmosphere was great and the terrace out the back overlooking the canal was lovely whilst the sun was going down. The young lad behind the bar is an absolute asset to you, he is a hard worker and had the bar totally under control 👍
