About This Pub
Ah, Goat on the Roof – it's one of those places that really sticks in your mind after a visit. Tucked away in the heart of Newbury, it's all about celebrating the best of British cuisine with a strong nod to sustainability and local sourcing. From the reviews I've seen, folks are raving about the food; it's fresh, vibrant, and full of flavour, with highlights like red mullet and beef bao that hit the spot every time. Pair that with their extensive wine selection, and you've got a meal that's not just tasty but thoughtfully put together. The team there are proper gems too – always up for a chat and genuinely enthusiastic about what they serve, which makes the atmosphere feel welcoming and relaxed, whether you're in the main restaurant or up in the wine bar for a more chilled-out vibe. On the flip side, it does wrap up early most days, so it's not ideal if you're planning a long night out, and the restaurant feel might not suit everyone if you're after something more pub-like and informal. All in all, it's a solid choice for a memorable meal with mates, especially if you're keen on supporting eco-friendly spots without skimping on quality.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely top-notch, with fresh, seasonal British ingredients that make every dish a real treat – think innovative flavours that leave you wanting more.
-
They've got an impressive wine list with over 150 organic and sustainable options, perfect for pairing with your meal and adding a lovely touch to the evening.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and passionate; it's like chatting with mates who know their stuff, making the whole visit feel warm and welcoming.
-
The atmosphere is spot on, whether you're tucking into a meal downstairs or relaxing in the cosy wine bar upstairs – it's just the right blend of inviting and special.
Cons
-
It tends to close a bit early, around 7 PM typically, so if you're after a late-night spot, you might have to head elsewhere.
-
As it's more of a restaurant vibe, it could feel a tad formal for those times when you fancy something super casual and laid-back.

Everything they have basically amazing! Went here with my bf and we ended up eating 2 plates of starter, 8 plates of main, 2 plates of dessert 🤣 Bless our body 🤣
We read the review before we came here and basically we just want Patrick to reply, seems like hilarious guy. Never missed to reply any review here 🤣
But! If you’re around, worth to visit! A perfect introduction of British tapaz! Will be our top list to come again in the future!
A fantastic experience. Really enjoyed the chefs table, the food was excellent and the atmosphere is wonderful. Lovely to talk to the chef and team about the menu etc. Would highly recommend
I was really impressed with the food and I'm definitely coming back. First time last night and we had a mix, my top hits were the red mullet (I'm a big fan) and the tarragon sauce was to die for, beef bao, oh and the butter and bread were really nice as well. Everything tasted fresh and I had also received a nice drink recommendation for vermouth. Congratulations to the team!
Lovely Dinner! Tasty British produce, plenty to choose from. Could quite happily eat multiple of the fish skewers too! We will be back
