About This Pub

Ah, The Lock Keeper – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper gem tucked away by the canal in Chester. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, it's got this inviting vibe that's hard to beat, especially if you fancy a spot of people-watching while sipping on a pint or tucking into some tasty grub. The staff really shine through as being approachable and eager to help, which makes popping in for a quick drink or a full meal feel effortless. And let's not forget the food; it sounds like they serve up generous portions that offer great bang for your buck, whether it's a pie of the day or some crispy chicken starters. Plus, being pet-friendly is a lovely touch – it's clear they go the extra mile to make everyone feel at home. On the flip side, though, the music can crank up a notch too high sometimes, which might put a damper on things if you're hoping for a mellow evening. There've been a few mentions of service getting a bit muddled, like staff sticking to one end of the bar and leaving others in limbo, so it pays to keep that in mind if you're in a rush. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed outing, but like any spot, it's got its quirks – I'd say it's worth a visit for the canal views alone, as long as you're up for a bit of give and take.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The location right by the canal is absolutely charming; it's a lovely spot to relax and watch the boats go by, especially on a nice day.
  • The staff are really friendly and attentive, making you feel welcome from the moment you walk in.
  • Food gets high marks for being excellent and offering good value, with hearty portions that leave you satisfied.
  • It's pet-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out with your furry friend, adding to the welcoming vibe.
  • There's plenty of outside seating, perfect for enjoying a drink in the fresh air when the weather's on your side.
Cons
  • The music can be a bit too loud at times, which might spoil the relaxed atmosphere if you're after a quiet chat.
  • Service can sometimes feel a tad disorganised, like when staff only serve from one part of the bar, leaving others waiting unnecessarily.
  • It might not be the best choice if you're looking for a consistently peaceful indoor experience, as the noise levels can vary.

Only stopped in for a quick drink. Barman was friendly and attentive. Music was very loud for how quiet the pub was, fortunately it was a nice evening and the outside seating was available. Didn't stay to eat.

I didn't eat, just popped in for a quick drink. Lovely location, right next to the canal. You can watch the boats, very relaxing

This place was a nice little place to eat to get out of the rain. A lot of space to sit in. The food was excellent and service was good. A couple of people were stood at the bar thinking they were being served and even though it was a long bar, the staff only served from one stretch of the bar.

Short break in Chester and popped into here on a Friday evening after a long day walking. Atmosphere was good, food and drink also good (sizing gave value for money as well) and the service from Stu was very friendly. Had starters (chunks of chicken in crispy batter) and mains (including pie of day) and Stu took the time to check if we were ready for mains rather than just bringing them out - would come again!
