About This Pub
Ah, The Old Dukes – it's one of those hidden gems in Chester that you stumble upon and think, 'Why haven't I been here sooner?' From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, it's a proper spot for kicking back with mates, especially if you're into watching the footie or rugby on their array of big screens. The shuffleboard and pool tables really liven things up, and the staff are just lovely, always ready with a smile and a helpful word. The food, when you can get it, is spot on – those dirty fries sound like an absolute winner for a cheeky snack. But, and there's always a but, isn't there? It does have its downsides; the kitchen shutting early can put a dampener on the night if you're peckish later on, and the prices might make you wince a bit, especially for drinks in the city centre. Plus, it feels like it's gone a touch downhill recently, which is a shame because it has so much potential. Overall, I'd say it's worth popping in for a pint and some sport if you're in the area, just go in with realistic expectations and plan your food orders wisely – it's all about that balanced pub experience, after all.

-
It's in a brilliant location, right by the cathedral in Chester, so it's super convenient if you're exploring the city.
Cons
-
The kitchen tends to close a bit too early, which can leave you disappointed if you're hoping for more food after the initial order.
-
Prices are on the higher side, like £6 for a pint, which might feel a tad steep even for a city centre spot.
-
It seems like the place has lost some of its sparkle lately, based on a few recent visits that weren't quite up to par.

Really sad to see this place go so downhill. Not sure if under new management but visited last night with a group to watch the super league and play some shuffleboard. Ordered one plate of chicken tenders and when they arrived at 6.50pm we tried to order 2 more but was told the kitchen was closed. At 6.50pm?? All 4 staff behind the bar couldn’t have been older than 20 and each had no clue what was going on. Really poor for what used to be our favorite sports bar.
The bartender who served us was very nice and friendly.
We played shuffleboard which was fun.
Great bar to watch sport with the plethora of big screens they have in there.
A nice pub that is hidden away but also right next to the city walls and cathedral. £6.00 a pint seems a bit excessive even for a city centre pub. Worth a visit if you're in chester and want a pleasant ambience.

We came here by chance after seeing it from the Chester walls, I'm so glad we came in.
The slider game they had at the back was so much fun. We decided to book a table to watch the England match the next day and had a great time. The dirty fries are the best we have ever had
Had a lovely lunch here. Staff were nice and food was so good too! They have loads of screens showing a variety of sports, they also have pool tables and shuffle tables. It is right by the cathedral so very central too.
