About This Pub
Ah, The King's Wark – it's one of those pubs in Leith that just draws you in with its cosy, timeless charm, like you've stepped into a bit of history right in the heart of Edinburgh. I have to say, the service really stood out for me; the team works like a well-oiled machine, attending to you in seconds and making sure everyone's dietary needs are sorted without any fuss – it's that kind of place where you feel genuinely cared for. And when it comes to the food, there are some absolute winners, like the French onion soup that's hearty and full of flavour, or the mussels that hit the spot if you're after something simple and tasty, all at a price that won't break the bank. But, let's be honest, it's not all perfect; I've heard a few tales of the fish and chips being a bit disappointing, with tiny portions and chips that taste like they've come straight from the freezer aisle, and some other dishes can be a tad oily or lacking in that extra zest. Still, with its dog-friendly vibe and family welcomes, it's a solid spot for a laid-back evening, and I'd recommend giving it a go if you're nearby – just maybe steer clear of the fishy options and opt for the safer bets. Overall, it's got that warm, community spirit that makes pub visits in Edinburgh so enjoyable, warts and all.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The service here is absolutely brilliant – staff are quick, friendly, and really go the extra mile to handle dietary needs, like for coeliacs, making you feel right at home.
-
Some dishes are spot on, like the French onion soup and mussels, which are packed with flavour and offer great value if you're watching your budget.
-
It's a charming spot with a lovely medieval vibe, perfect for a relaxed catch-up, and it's super welcoming for families and dogs, adding to that community feel.
Cons
-
The fish and chips can be a letdown – portions are skimpy with more batter than actual fish, and the chips don't live up to pub standards, more like frozen shop-bought ones.
-
A few dishes, such as the mussels or fish, come across as mediocre or overly heavy on oil and breading, missing that extra punch of flavour.
-
Some meals feel on the small side for the price, like the burger, which might leave you wanting a bit more bang for your buck.

Probably the worst fish and chips we've ever had..to be honest it looked like less than half a fish each with more batter than fish. The chips I can only say we're awful for a pubs standard.. resembled frozen aldi skin on fries.
The burger was decent but very small..
With the awful chips..and very little of them.
3 fish
1 burger
1 pint @ £6.50
2 cola,
Including a service charge £80.........
Not one for making a sceen as there was other diners in.. but was making my way back in where I met the bar girl taking the bottles to the recycling, spoke to her and mentioned how I was struggling to come to terms as how much it cost..response was prices are on the menu..
I was struggling with the cost for the very little we got and the quality...no apology or come back inside I'll get the manager to chat with you.. just walked away as if was normal service
Really Really disappointing
We loved the French onion soup. However, mussels were mediocre and could use a little more flavor. Fish was very heavy on breading and oil. Cute place and very friendly service.
We were very happy to eat here. I won't lie, we were a bit unsure when we walked in but the food was good and we left pleased. One of our party is coeliac and we were looked after excellently, with great menu advice and a reassurance that the chips had their own fryer to avoid cross contamination. A rare treat.
What a wonderful surprise. Coming here to have a quick launch, I had the chance to try the mussels. Full of flavour, not that expensive and the pub looks like a time travel door back in the medieval. Really nice place, suggested if you are on a budget and want to have a really nice time.
I had the best service here, in years, including high dining visits.
I got attended by 3 of the staff, not the usual single server and they worked as a team, as clockwork. I got my beer served in seconds. I hardly finished talking to the person helping me to choose at the bar, and the drink just showed up served by a colleague. This high sped flow repeated with my main and dessert. It was honestly a joy seeing them handing everything with such ease. When I needed something, all I needed was one look at one of them and they came. Incredible staff.
I also liked some details I observed about laying things out in advance. The closest drink menu board to the bar was low and alcohol free beers, which I have never seen before even displayed, let alone closest to the bar. Every table had tap water, glasses, salt and pepper. My basic needs were anticipated without asking already. The longer I stayed the more details I fell in love with.
The smoked haddock chowder was very tasty and rich. The place was roomy but cozy at the same time.
I will certainly return. The scotch egg from the next table is inviting me back too ;)
