About This Pub

Ah, The Kings Head – it's one of those classic pubs in Carlisle that you hear about from fellow beer lovers, and honestly, it has some real gems going for it. Tucked away in the heart of the city, it's got this wonderful historic vibe dating back centuries, which just adds to the charm when you're settling in for a pint. The real ales are top-notch; they've won awards year after year and even made it into the Good Beer Guide, so if that's your thing, you're in for a treat. Plus, they've got food on offer until the early afternoon, and from what I've seen in the reviews, dishes like fish and chips can be spot on for a quick bite. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – some folks have had run-ins with staff who weren't exactly welcoming, which is a shame because it can sour an otherwise lovely visit. And let's not forget the opening times; it seems like it doesn't always stick to the schedule, so you might rock up and find the doors shut, which has left a few people frustrated. All in all, it's a solid spot if you fancy a traditional pub experience, but I'd say go in with an open mind and maybe check ahead to make the most of it – that way, you can enjoy the highs and steer clear of the lows.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Fantastic selection of real ales, including award-winning ones like Yates Bitter, making it a must-visit for beer enthusiasts.
  • Lovely historic location right in the heart of Carlisle, perfect for a quick stop after exploring the castle or cathedral.
  • Welcoming vibes in the bar at times, with chatty staff that make you feel right at home.
  • Decent food options available until the afternoon, like fish and chips, which have been a hit with some visitors.
Cons
  • Inconsistent opening hours – it can be a bit of a gamble whether it's open, especially if it's quiet.
  • Occasional rude or sullen staff that might turn you away, which can really put a dampener on things.
  • Limited draught beer selection beyond the ales, so if you're after more variety, you might be disappointed.
  • The space can feel a tad small or cramped downstairs, making it less ideal on busier days.

This place is in the good pub beer guide but unfortunately it should be in the rude bar staff guide. Sullen barmaid actually turned 6 paying adults away with a sleeping baby in the middle of the afternoon whilst there were only 2 other customers in. Please update website to show you don't want any children in and actually you don't want to make any money. And get friendlier staff

Small to Small Medium sized area downstairs. Bar area is reasonable well stocked, though the draught selection is limited. Prices reasonable. Food is served, though I cannot comment as I didn't order anything. Upstairs, I think there is another seating area, where there is a lot more room. Toilets are clean.

Good if it's open, but rarely is. Was a good pub for many years. Beers always well kept and a good pint. However for over 3 years now can never count on it being open. They won't use social media to communicate so a lottery if it's open. They close if it's quiet, if it's busy on a Saturday they will definitely close as apparently wants to look after staff and not have them overwhelmed. Also will just be randomly closed on certain nights with no communication.

You can call it Local Pub for Local People. Friendly and welcoming vibes. Bar guy was very chatty and friendly. Serving customer well. He was good at his job. Had tried a drink and enjoy the friendly atmosphere.

The King's Head is a wonderful traditional pub with a very intimate atmosphere. We stopped by for lunch while passing through Carlisle on our travels. I had the smaller fish & chips while my partner opted for steak pie & chips. The fish was excellent, however the chips were quite thick & as such undercooked in the middle, plus there seemed to be mixed sizes (steak chips, French fries etc) so I left most of them, but it was reasonably priced, and I can imagine it's a belting little place on a weekend night. Lovely place, staff straightforward & attentive, kid certainly go back again. Just without the chips 🍟👍.
