About This Pub
Ah, The Jolly Friar – it's one of those pubs that really warms your cockles, you know? Tucked away in Basildon, it's got that classic British pub charm where you can pop in for a quiet coffee or gather with friends for a proper knees-up. The staff are top-notch, always up for a chat and making sure everyone's looked after, which really adds to the homely feel. Their menu's full of hearty classics that won't break the bank, and with options for the kids and a brilliant beer garden that's dog-friendly, it's spot on for family outings or just chilling out. Plus, if you're into sports or live music, they've got Sky Sports, TNT, and even bands playing – it's got that lively community spirit that makes you want to come back. But, let's be straight, it's not all roses; there was a right nasty incident with a hot drink spill that left someone injured, and it seems the handling could've been better. Still, with an overall rating pushing 4.2, it's clear the good days far outnumber the bad, so I'd say it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just keep an eye out and enjoy the best bits!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
-
They've got a cracking selection of drinks, from real ales and ciders to cocktails and even low or no-alcohol options, perfect for all tastes.
-
The food is spot on – traditional pub grub that's great value, with tasty desserts and even award-winning dishes for the little ones.
-
It's a family-friendly spot with a dog-friendly beer garden, ideal for catching up with mates or hosting small events like celebrations.
-
The atmosphere is buzzing, especially with live bands, sports on the telly, and a real community feel that makes it a go-to local haunt.
Cons
-
There was that unfortunate incident where a server spilled hot tea, causing a nasty burn – it's a reminder that accidents can happen and service isn't always flawless.
-
From what I've seen, the management response to issues might not always hit the mark, which could leave you feeling a bit let down if things go wrong.

My first visit to your pub today what a fantastic venue staff excellent and as I was with my football team made it even more enjoyable could not wait to get back home to tell the family many thanks BIG DAVE UPNEY FC SEE YOU AGAIN SOON
Friendly staff, good value food and drinks, look forward to seeing a band play here one night!
AVOIDDD! Me and my mum went for some lunch and she ordered tea, the server spilled the ROASTING hot tea all over my poor mums leg😡. She was left with a burn mark on her thigh and we had to leave to seek medical attention.
We dealt with an Irish guy (possibly manager) but he couldn't have been more unhelpful and couldn't wait to get rid of us!
We were left to clean up my mums leg on our own.
We had my sister's wake there yesterday. The staff were wonderful with warming food and being friendly. Just fantastic. Our section was cordoned off. Everyone was respectful. I recommend having small events at this pub. (It's actually part of our childhood era). It was made special
Great atmosphere here. The owner has great taste in live bands as he booked us! We had a great time, everyone was really friendly. We set up from 7:30pm and it had a really nice community feel about the place. There were various teams when we arrived; (football and cyclists) who chose to meet here with their families and it was a really pleasant atmosphere. Then when we started around 9pm, the evening crowd appeared and they were equally pleasant.
