About This Pub

Ah, The Horseshoes Country Pub & Dining Room – it's one of those places that just hits the spot for a proper British pub experience. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food really steals the show; think fresh, home-cooked dishes like massive portions of haddock and chips or a cracking steak and Guinness pie that leave you satisfied and smiling. The staff are spot on too, offering that welcoming, chatty service that makes you feel like you're among mates, and it's ideal for everything from a quick lunch to a birthday bash with the family. On the flip side, it does get heaving at peak times, so you might end up with a slight delay on your order, which is a small price to pay for such a popular spot. Overall, it's a solid choice if you're after good value in a cosy setting – I'd say give it a try if you're in the Waltham Abbey area, but maybe book ahead to avoid any hassle.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely top-notch – home-cooked, fresh, and with portions so generous they'll have you loosening your belt after a meal.
  • The service is warm and efficient, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It's a charming country pub with a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a casual get-together or celebrating with a group.
  • They handle bookings well, which is handy for larger crowds, and the menu offers tasty options like fresh fish and chips or hearty roasts.
Cons
  • It can get quite busy at times, leading to the occasional wait for your food, even if the pub is buzzing for good reason.
  • The website seems a bit unreliable and hard to navigate, which might make it tricky if you're trying to check details before heading out.

First time we visited this pub in over 40 years (after moving away). Even found some locals who remember Norman Souch & Ruby (landlords) from that time + other regulars... As mentioned by others, food is amazing (home cooked) quality and portions are enormous - we had the haddock & chips (so fresh) followed by a shared bread & butter pud - we were so stuffed! Hugely enjoyable. The pub still has its old world charm & the ladies are super welcoming & friendly. No hesitation in recommending - need to come back here before another 40 years goes by!

We came to the Horseshoe today for lunch for my mum's birthday. There was 10 of us so we booked in advance. We all had an amazing lunch. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their food and drinks and my mum enjoyed her birthday lunch! There was a slight delay getting our food but the pub was full and nearly everyone on our table ordered a ploughman's with loads of extras so it was understandable that it was behind. The staff apologised non stop and were so kind. All 3 ladies that served us were lovely but the lady with the ponytail and grey t-shirt (really gutted we didn't get her name!) was so sweet! She was really distressed that the food was delayed but she was so kind and apologetic. Rest assured that the delay did not ruin our day, we all had a great afternoon with amazing food and we are very grateful for the way we were treated. This pub, the food and the staff are amazing and we will definitely be back. I'd recommend this place to everyone! Thanks again ❤️

A lovely country pub. A few friends went on a rainy Sunday in January. The roast comes in 3 sizes - with the medium beating me! Good quality food, almost excessive portions. I will revisit.

A Charming Escape with Delicious Food and Friendly Service The food is simply outstanding—every dish we tried was bursting with flavor and beautifully presented. I particularly enjoyed the steak and guinness pie and fish and chips, which was cooked to perfection with generous portions. The staff here are incredibly friendly and attentive, always ensuring that you have everything you need and it shows in the quality of service. The pub itself is cosy and charming, with a lovely outdoor area that's perfect for enjoying a drink on a sunny day. It's also very family-friendly, making it a great spot for both casual dining and special occasions. Overall, The Horseshoes is a delightful place to unwind with great food, great company, and a great atmosphere. I definitely recommend it and we will come back soon.
