About This Pub
Ah, The Horse Shepshed – it's one of those spots that really warms you up with its hearty country pub feel, tucked away in Shepshed, Leicestershire. From what I've gathered from folks' chats online, it's a brilliant place if you're after some properly done grub; think lamb that's spot-on or a burger that hits the mark, all made fresh with lovely presentation that makes you feel like you've got something special. The outdoor area is just ace for a sunny afternoon pint, and being dog-friendly means you can bring the whole family along, furry members included. The staff usually keep things ticking over nicely with their friendly service and a solid range of ales, which is always a plus for a good catch-up with mates. But, let's be honest, it isn't perfect – it can get packed to the rafters, leading to waits that might leave you a bit peckish, and the prices do add up, so it's worth checking your wallet first. Occasionally, the service feels a touch stretched, which might mean less chit-chat than you'd like. All in all, it's a solid choice for a meal out or a quick stop near the M1, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and perhaps avoid the peak times for a smoother experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is top-notch, with a great variety of dishes like lamb, burgers, and pizzas that are cooked from scratch and presented beautifully – it's a real treat for the taste buds.
-
It's got a lovely, cosy atmosphere with plenty of outside seating, making it perfect for sunny days or a relaxing evening, and it's dog-friendly too, which is always a bonus.
-
The staff are generally friendly and efficient, keeping things running smoothly with a good selection of well-kept ales and other drinks on offer.
-
Its location near the M1 makes it an excellent stop-off point, easy to get to and with a decent car park for convenience.
Cons
-
It can get really busy, especially on Sundays, leading to long waits for food and sometimes feeling a bit understaffed, which might put a damper on your visit.
-
Prices are on the higher side, so you might find yourself paying a bit more than expected, even if the quality justifies it for some.
-
The service isn't always spot-on; there have been times when the team seems stretched thin, making interactions a tad rushed.
-
While the food is good, it's not always a wow factor for everyone – some dishes might come across as just average rather than exceptional.

Excellent M1 stop off. The pub has a variety of plates at different pricing. I had lamb, my husband had the burger. The chefs really know what they are doing. Brilliant presentation. Waitresses were too busy to interact .. perhaps understaffed on the day we visited. Overall 10/10
Lovely cosy pub on the main road south of Shepshed. A couple of cask ales plus the regular beers. An efficient team of friendly young staff keep the food and drinks flowing. Lots of outside seating and a reasonable sized car park.
Food is a little pricey but very nicey.
Can be busy on Sunday evening so book in advance.
Lovely pub but very busy when we were there which meant we had quite a wait for our food. Their interpretation of aubergine parmigiana wasn't quite the same as mine but it was OK. Staff nice, and dog friendly which was good.
Simple pub grub!
Nice location as not to far from the M1, the pub it's self was nice and clean inside, there were a few larger tables so the service was slow but that's wasn't too bad.
Food was average, not bad but not wow. We ordered and few pizzas and other bits, wish I had gone for the fish and chips as that looked lovely.
As I said food was OK but wouldn't come back anytime soon.
Fantastic place for food and drink. All cooked from scratch and to a high standard. Good menu choices including pizza cooked in their own oven outside. Nice outdoor space for sunny days.
Prices are on the high side but represent excellent value considering the standard. Good choice of well kept ale, wine and other drinks.
Staff are professional and attentive.
