About This Pub

Ah, The Hop Merchant – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in the middle of Nottingham's hustle and bustle. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, most folks absolutely love the place for its friendly staff who make you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick drink or hosting an event. The drinks are reasonably priced, and that outdoor seating is a winner on a nice day, letting you sit back and watch the world go by. Plus, there's a quirky little private room upstairs that's spot on for a more intimate chat or meeting up with mates. On the flip side, it's not all perfect – a couple of people have mentioned dodgy service moments, like ending up with a sticky glass or tea that didn't quite hit the mark, so you might want to keep an eye out for that. Overall, with a solid 4.3 rating from loads of happy visitors, it's definitely worth checking out if you're after a laid-back spot, but just go in with realistic expectations for the occasional off day.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • Fantastic central location in the heart of Nottingham, making it ideal for a relaxed pint and a bit of people-watching on a sunny day.
  • Friendly and welcoming staff who go the extra mile, creating a real sense of community and supporting events brilliantly.
  • Reasonable prices on drinks, so you won't break the bank for a good time.
  • Lovely outdoor seating area, perfect for enjoying the weather and soaking up the city vibes.
  • Quirky atmosphere with a private upstairs room that's great for a quieter catch-up or small gatherings.
Cons
  • Occasional service hiccups, like getting a dirty glass or weak tea with limited refills, which can put a dampener on things.
  • No parking nearby, so it's a bit of a faff if you're driving into the city centre.

The Hop Merchant has been an amazing and supportive venue for me over the last few months. Emma, the team provided a real lifeline at the end of last year when I found myself requiring a new venue for events I run. I'm now there four or five days a week and I feel like part of the furniture now. Lovely place.

Went for a beer and two 2 cups of tea, asked for bitter, and got a pale ale in a dirty glass (sticky round the top) tea for two, one tea pot(said she only had 1 pot )that was enough for 1 and half cups was told if wanted refill to ask, so we did and she just filled with hot water so the tea was weak. On top of all that, one of the cups used had lipstick on it from a previous customer. Mens trough urianal is bent in the middle so pee is pooling in the center and it stinks.

Nat and Lauryn were great... Busy serving the customers but both had a friendly outgoing nature. This pub is right in the town center of Nottingham so unfortunately no parking. It's a quirky little pub with a private seating / eating quiet room upstairs (shown in photos) ideal study / meeting room away from the maddening crowd and hustle of city centre life. Great little pub...😎
