About This Pub
Ah, The Hoop and Grapes – what a lovely spot it is, tucked away on Aldgate High Street. If you're after a proper pub experience with a dash of history, this one's a winner; it's got that wonky, timber-framed building that's stood the test of time since the 1600s, and you can just imagine the stories those old walls could tell. The food's a real highlight – think tasty pies and fresh beers that pair beautifully, as one mate mentioned with their chicken pie and Guinness. The staff are an absolute gem, always ready with a smile and a helpful suggestion, even on a bustling Wednesday night. But, let's be honest, it does have its downsides; it fills up quickly, so you might end up jostling for space, and while the atmosphere's lively, it can get a bit noisy if you're hoping for a quiet pint. Plus, some of the modern updates inside might not sit well with purists who fancy a more untouched traditional feel. All in all, it's a cracking choice for a meal out or a casual drink, as long as you go in with realistic expectations – I'd say it's well worth a visit for the history and grub alone.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The historic charm is absolutely captivating; it's like stepping back in time with its timber-framed building that survived the Great Fire of London.
-
The food and drinks are spot on – fresh beers like Guinness and delicious pies make for a proper treat.
-
Service is warm and welcoming, with staff going the extra mile to recommend options and find tables even when it's busy.
-
It has a lively, cozy atmosphere that's perfect for a casual catch-up or a hearty meal.
Cons
-
It can get really crowded, especially on weekdays, making it a bit of a challenge to snag a table.
-
Some might find it a tad too food-focused, with a large dining area that feels more restaurant-like than a traditional boozer.
-
The interior's been modernised in places, which takes away from that authentic historic feel for those who prefer it untouched.

Great food, fresh beer and cozy atmosphere.
I visited here at 7pm of weekday and the place was full of people, but managed to find an empty table to have my dinner.
Their chicken pie was really tasty and went well with Guiness beer. I will definitely visit there again.
As a walk in patron we were greeted by a friendly young woman last night on the public holiday. Coming from Australia good to know no surcharge for PHs. As probably many old pubs, you can’t guess from the outside what to expect on the inside, but exactly that is what makes this place unique. The low ceiling and rustic interior, makes you feel comfortable and welcomed. A good menu paired with cozy seating arrangements, must delight everyone who’s visiting this pub. All food we ordered were delicious and well presented. Contemplating on coming back while still in the area, but definitely a venue to be highly recommended.
Obviously a great pub and service was fine. It's a bit foody for me, large dining area at the back. Inside it feels like a lot has been modernised which is a pity.
Guinness was good as was the pork scratchings. Snacks menu looked excellent too.
Terrific pub and excellent service!
We had a wonderful dinner and beers at this historic pub on the Aldgate High Street. Even though it was a Wednesday night, the pub was heaving and we didn't have a booking. The wonderful Damian recommended some beers, found us a table and served our meals. The beers were terrific, we loved our fish and chips, and fish pie, and Damian's service was super friendly and professional. Note that there is a 10% service charge for table service but Damian earned every penny of it!
Me and my Grandma visited this place after we were told it was the oldest pub in London during a walking tour. We had dinner already but we got some fudge cake dessert. The inside is very cool- old brick and wood. The atmosphere was a bit loud but it’s a pub after all. We sat ourselves down and we had to go to the bar to order, it was around 9pm. The history was fascinating and the pictures- especially of the Great Fire of 1666 were so cool to look at (wish I took a picture of it). I highly recommend coming here.
