About This Pub

Ah, Bell Bush Lane – what a lovely little find in the bustling City of London! From what I've gathered chatting about it with mates, it's got this incredible history dating back to the 1660s, which really shines through in the snug bar and upstairs dining area with its old beams and classic decor. Folks rave about the real ales and the tasty pies, making it a top choice for a quick lunch or unwinding after a long day. The location's brilliant too, just a stone's throw from Cannon Street Station, so it's dead easy to nip in for a pint. On the flip side, it's on the smaller side, which means it can feel a tad squished when it's busy, and the upstairs spot is quite modest, so if you're with a big group, you might have to get creative with seating. Still, with perks like being dog-friendly and having sports on the screens, it's got that community feel where you can just relax and enjoy the vibe. Overall, I'd say it's a solid spot for anyone after an authentic pub experience – the good bits far outweigh the minor niggles, and it's got a solid 4.4 rating from the crowd, so give it a go if you're in the area!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's got that wonderful historic vibe, having survived the Great Fire of London – feels like stepping back in time with its old beams and charming decor.
  • The location is spot on, right near Cannon Street Station, making it ideal for a quick stop after work or while exploring the city.
  • They've got a great selection of real ales and cask beers, plus it's dog-friendly, so you can pop in with your furry mate.
  • The atmosphere is cosy and welcoming, perfect for a relaxed chat over a pint or enjoying a traditional pie upstairs.
  • With things like Wi-Fi, HD screens for sports, and even a function area, it's versatile for both casual visits and small gatherings.
Cons
  • The pub is quite small, so it can get a bit cramped during busy times, especially if you're after a seat.
  • Upstairs dining is limited in size, which might not suit larger groups or if you're looking for a more spacious spot.
  • Operating hours vary, and it seems to wind down earlier in the evenings, so it might not be the place for late-night adventures.

Very good good pub on a side street very close to Cannon Street Station. Two cask beers on handpump when I last visited. Standing room outside on the pavement at the front. A small upstairs eating area doubles up as a function room and is available for hire.

A hidden gem 💎 with London grit & heritage, surviving in the face of City over modernisation. Tucked down a City back street adjacent to a major train station the location is excellent to hide in the city ready to go. The wood lattice ceiling & walls recall the wood framed history of the City of London. Two large front entrances lead into an Edward Ian style front room pub with simple side bar. Workers London paraphernalia hang from the ceiling & decorate the walls. There's a great feature mirror over the fireplace & plenty of discreet high screens for sports. High stool perimeter seating & plenty of outdoor, quiet street drinking spaces. Easy rock tunes & a rough & ready appearance add to the grit of a pub determined to stay real in an area where too much pub heritage has been over modernised. This is a real London city pub comfortable in is vibe & a great find.

Pies are good here. Traditional pub. Decor very pleasing. A nice place to be. Better upstairs than down.

Traditional little pub tucked down a quiet side street. It had a few decent ales on draft and the usual beers on tap. The service was amiable and quick, and prices seemed fair. There's a well appointed dining area upstairs although it's modest in size. In fact the whole pub is relatively cosy in size. There's plenty of overflow outside though as people are welcome to spill out and have an after-work beer on the pavement in front when the weather permits.

Hidden gem is over used, but this pub really is. I used to go here when I first started work in the City in the late 80’s and it hasn’t changed a bit! Staff were excellent too and the place is full of history, seems unbelievable that it was originally a riverside pub! Worth a trip when you’re around Cannon St
