About This Pub

Ah, The Hillgate – it's one of those timeless pubs that just feels like a welcoming haven in the heart of Notting Hill, with its rich history dating back to 1885 and those quaint streets that make you forget the city's hustle. I really appreciate how the staff go above and beyond to make everything smooth; they're always on hand with a smile and quick to sort out any requests, which adds to that homely feel. The food is a standout – think juicy roasts on Sundays or perfectly cooked fish and chips that hit the spot every time, all made with care using the best British produce. It's got this lively buzz, especially when the weather's nice and you're enjoying a drink outside, but it still manages to feel intimate and relaxed. On the flip side, it does fill up quickly, so you might end up queuing or needing to book ahead, and if you're out late, the kitchen wrapping up early could cramp your plans for a proper dinner. All in all, it's a brilliant spot for a laid-back evening or a special gathering, and I'd say it's well worth a visit if you're after that authentic pub experience with a bit of character.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always making you feel right at home with their efficient service and warm chats.
  • The food is spot on, with delicious British classics like fish and chips and Sunday roasts that use fresh, seasonal ingredients – it's simple, hearty grub done just right.
  • It has a lively atmosphere, especially on weekends, with a buzzing vibe that's perfect for a relaxed catch-up or a bit of people-watching.
  • There's a great selection of drinks, including cocktails, so whether you're after a classic pint or something a tad fancier, they've got you covered.
  • The historical charm of this Notting Hill landmark, complete with outdoor seating for sunny days, makes it a proper cosy hideaway in the quieter streets.
Cons
  • It can get quite busy, particularly on weekends, which might mean waiting for a table or struggling to find space if you pop in spontaneously.
  • The kitchen closes a bit early on weekdays, so if you're planning a late-night bite, you might miss out on the full menu options.

I just had the pleasure of celebrating my birthday with a group of 16 people and it was absolutely brilliant. The food, service, drinks and atmosphere were amazing. I had booked it very last minute and the staff was very helpful with everything, they made my life so easy that I get to enjoy each moment without stressing being the host. Big thanks to the whole Hillgate team.

This is one of the best pub I've ever visited in London. I ate fish and chip which is tasty. The staff was very friendly and kind. I will visit again next time.

Visited here on a rare sunny Sunday after visiting the farmers market nearby in February, and was lucky enough to find a spot outside in the sun to enjoy a cold drink. After smelling and seeing everyone else's food, my stomach started rumbling, and their fish and chips were whispering eat me! The fish was fresh, light, fluffy, and crispy, as we're the chips too. The scotch egg was also one of the best I've ever had, and their sweet corn ribs were a flavour bomb too. This place is definitely worth a visit, and it makes sense that it's a local favourite spot.

On this beautiful Sunday, with a clear blue sky and the sun shining brightly, we couldn’t have chosen a better restaurant than The Hillgate in London. Our friend brought us here to try the famous Roast Beef Sirloin, a traditional London dish. The waiters were incredibly friendly, which made our dining experience even more delightful. The food was amazing—the meat was tender, and the vegetables were perfectly cooked.

This has become our fav local pub in the summer as it has great outdoor seating. We came in many times and their Sunday roast was lovely. The chicken breast was really juicy and the beef was very well cooked so we are very satisfied with what we have. We also enjoy their steak and fries days as well as it is great value not to mention the huge portion of mussels for 20 quid.
