About This Pub
Ah, The Highlander in Scarborough – it's one of those places that really captures the essence of a classic British pub by the sea, isn't it? I have to say, it's got so much going for it; the location is just brilliant, perched right on the esplanade with cracking views of the coast, making it ideal for a casual pint or a bite to eat after a stroll along the front. The food's a real highlight – think delicious home-made dishes like feta salad or fish and chips that won't break the bank, and that Sunday carvery is an absolute bargain at around £10, with plenty of options cooked to perfection. Plus, the staff are genuinely warm and helpful, adding to that welcoming atmosphere, especially if you're catching some live entertainment or relaxing in the outdoor seating on a sunny day. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing; if you're thinking of booking a room, you might notice it's a bit dated in places, with things like mismatched wallpaper or the odd hole in the floorboards that could use some TLC. Check-in can be a tad hasty too, and while it's clean enough, it's not always immaculate, so it pays to manage your expectations. All in all, it's a solid choice for a laid-back visit or a quick meal, but perhaps not the first pick if you're after a luxury overnight stay – still, I'd pop in again for the grub and the views alone!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The location is absolutely spot on, right by the Scarborough coast with stunning views and easy access to the seafront – perfect for a relaxing day out.
-
They've got a cracking selection of beers and a menu full of tasty options like feta salad, fish and chips, and that Sunday carvery which is brilliant value at around £10.
-
The staff are really friendly and attentive, making you feel welcome whether you're just popping in for a drink or staying the night.
-
Outdoor seating is a treat, especially on a sunny day, and there's often great background music or live entertainment to keep things lively.
-
Rooms are spacious and the overall experience can be top-notch, with some folks raving about the views and the helpful service from the new owners.
Cons
-
Some of the rooms could do with a proper refresh – we've heard about mismatched wallpaper, holes in the floorboards, and even a wobbly toilet, which isn't ideal for a comfortable stay.
-
Check-in can feel a bit rushed and basic at times, without much in the way of helpful info when you arrive.
-
Outdoor areas might have a few cigarette butts lying around, which can put a damper on things if you're looking for a pristine spot.
-
It's not always spotlessly clean, though it's generally tidy enough – just something to keep in mind if you're fussy about that sort of thing.

Stayed in the highlander last night as we came for a concert. Room was very spacious however needed a big upgrade (mismatching wallpaper, tape around extension cord, holes in floor boards and a toilet that rocked) clean enough but not spotless
Check in was rushed and basic. Was told no info upon arrival other than lift is broken and we were on the 2nd floor.
Came down to breakfast at 9:05 (Saturday AM) only to be told breakfast is 8-9 and was told I would have come to knock but didn’t want to wake you. Needless to say this lead to us checking out immediately
Maybe the hotel inspector needs to pay a visit to this hotel
The pub is one of the best I’ve visited in Scarborough. Nice range of beers and good food at very reasonable prices. We had feta salad last night which was excellent. Came back today for fish n chips and a steak which were very nice.
The background music is also really good and the staff very friendly
If you want a good pub well worth the trip up the funicular and it’s two minutes walk
Sat outside the pub in the sun with a beer. Nice choice of beer and a good menu with a two for so much deal. The lady behind the bar was very friendly. The only one thing we noticed was where we sat was full of tab ends on the floor round us. Not the pubs fault but a quick sweep round before opening would make it look a nicer place to sit.
Just been for the Highlander Hotel Sunday Carvery. I would highly recommend. A choice of four meats, and plenty of veg; all cooked to perfection. Incredibly good value also at around £10 for a "standard plate" (which would be large in other places). Will visit again.
Great experience. The new owners are organised and very attentive to detail. They really looked after us and were so helpful. Rooms, bar, breakfast and views all great. Thoroughly recommended.
