About This Pub

Ah, let me tell you about The Caledonian New Southlands Hotel – it's one of those places that really grows on you once you're there. From what I've gathered from the reviews, the staff stand out as absolute stars; they're super helpful and work their socks off to ensure everything runs smoothly, which makes the whole experience feel warm and personal. The food's another highlight – plenty of options served up quickly most of the time, and folks have mentioned enjoying the hearty portions and good flavours, though it's not without its off days, like when queues build up or meals aren't as hot as they'd like. The rooms are generally clean and comfy, with fresh bedding and space to stretch out, but it's clear some areas, especially the bathrooms, could do with a bit of updating to bring them up to scratch. Location-wise, it's spot on, just a stone's throw from the seafront, making it ideal for a relaxing getaway, and the evening entertainment adds a fun vibe that keeps things lively. All in all, while there are a couple of niggles that might trip you up, like not enough bar staff on peak nights, it's a solid choice for anyone looking for a friendly base in Scarborough – I'd say it's worth a visit if you're after good value and a bit of that classic British hospitality.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always going the extra mile to make you feel welcome and looked after.
  • The food is generally plentiful and tasty, with some reviewers raving about the portions and variety, especially the soup.
  • Rooms are clean and comfortable, with fresh bedding and spacious layouts that make for a pleasant stay.
  • It's in a great spot, just a short walk from the seafront and town, making it easy to explore Scarborough without the hassle.
  • Evening entertainment is a nice touch, adding to the lively atmosphere and giving you something to look forward to after dinner.
Cons
  • A few rooms and bathrooms haven't been fully refurbished yet, which can make them feel a bit dated despite being clean.
  • Food service can be hit or miss – sometimes there are long queues or dishes that aren't piping hot, which is a shame.
  • The bar might not have enough staff during busy evenings, leading to waits that could put a damper on the fun.
  • No specific operating hours are listed, which might leave you guessing about when to pop in, especially if you're planning a visit.

Rooms still in the process of being refurbished - our room was lovely but bathroom needs done. Staff all very attentive and hard working and food was plentiful and lovely. Just one road back from seafront but lovely and quiet end of South Bay

Spent a long weekend here with a group of more than 40 ladies. Rooms were great for the price. Good choice of food served quickly and waiting staff were extremely helpful and hard working. Could have had more staff on the bar in the evening, but they worked non-stop. Entertainment in the evenings was good, and there was something on every night we were there (even on Sunday). The only negative is the tiny lift, which only holds 4 people, or 2 with cases, which, in a party of 40+ was a bit frustrating. However, most of us were able to get out steps up and used the stairs. Brilliant value for money.

Overall clean rooms staff pleasant enough. Entertainment reasonable good, main let down was food, first day long queues second day longer as chef hadn't appeared to be fair third and 4th day huge improvement, evening meals hit n miss some of the food not very warm, soup most nights was good but with warm roll, think they forgot to warm the roll every night. Service was OK staff polite and helpful, bar staff sometimes struggled although it wasn't that busy.

The staff were super friendly, helpful and welcoming! The hotel was overall good. We'd definitely stay here again. The location was great and an easy walk into town - roughly 15 minutes, or we could take the Cliff Top tram, which was less than a 5 minute walk, this took us direct to the south beach and the Spa. The biggest criticism I have is the shower pressure was poor and the shower cubical size was very small. The room we had was spacious and had every we needed. It was very good value for money and our cost included breakfast. The breakfast was a buffet and it was ok, the food was fresh and hot. The coffee was a machine and it was rank, but I'm a snob when it comes to coffee! We love that it's dog friendly and will bring our pup next time we visit.

The public areas and many of the bedrooms are delightful. The staff very friendly and helpful. The food was good too. Our room had not been updated but it was still pleasant, spacious and spotlessly clean. The beds were comfortable and bedding felt fresh. Having a large car park was a bonus. I would definitely return to this hotel.
