About This Pub

You know, when I popped into The Head of the River, I was really taken by its classic Oxford vibe, right there by the Thames – it's just the sort of place that makes you want to linger with a pint and soak up the scenery. The food's a highlight; that fish and chips is spot on, and from what I've heard from others, it's consistently brilliant. Plus, the staff go out of their way to make you feel at home, which is always a plus for a relaxed catch-up with friends. If you're after a stay, the rooms sound lovely too, all overlooking the river. On the downside, it's not the cheapest option, so you might think twice if you're on a tight budget, and being card-only could catch you out if you're not prepared. All things considered, it's a gem for a special outing, as long as you're up for a bit of indulgence – definitely worth a visit for the atmosphere alone!

Stunning Riverside Pub with Classic Oxford Charm! The Head of the River is hands down one of the best pubs in Oxford — a perfect blend of great food, scenic views, and that unmistakable Oxford charm. Set right by the Thames, the riverside location is unbeatable, especially on a sunny day. You can watch the punts glide by while enjoying a pint – it’s quintessentially Oxford! The menu offers a great mix of classic British dishes and seasonal specials. The fish and chips were crispy and delicious, and the Sunday roast is top-notch! The bar is well-stocked with a fine selection of local ales, wines, and cocktails. The ambiance strikes the right balance between cozy and lively — ideal for everything from relaxed lunches to evening drinks. The staff are warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, making the experience even better. They also offer charming rooms upstairs, which makes it a great stay for those wanting to soak in the Oxford atmosphere overnight. Highly recommended for tourists and locals alike — it’s more than just a pub; it’s an experience!

We came here to eat a couple of times- the food is excellent. Especially the fish & chips- are a 10/10 (and I’ve had many many fish & chips). The staff are also incredible- GARY (Chef) was a big reason for us coming back again and again- his passion, kindness and care for his craft was inspiring. Recommend highly, overall.

Been here a few times over the years, booked a dinning patio table online, was quick and easy process. As there are different levels for outside dining and drinks. Love sitting out overlooking the river when the sun is out. Food was presented well and very tasty, a little on the expensive side, but I guess that's down to location. Service was good and our waitress was very friendly.

This was great location to visit only for a drink, situated by the River Thames with beautiful views! The counter is modern and lighting is pretty, flags adorn the interior too. I had one of the ciders on tap and appreciated the bench outside, although they are card only which is not something I think businesses should do.

We had a perfect stay, can’t fault this beautiful pub/hotel. Lovely location next to the river, super friendly and welcoming staff. The room was beautiful and well appointed with a comfy bed and lovely teas, coffees and biscuits. The breakfast offering was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed the hot options. We booked last minute and really pleased to have picked The Head of the River - we’ll definitely return, a faultless visit.
