About This Pub

Ah, The Slow & Steady—it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Oxford, part of the Dodo Pub Co. family, and I've got to say, it's got that warm, inviting charm that makes you settle in straight away. From what I've gathered from the buzz around, the staff are top-notch; they're quick, efficient, and genuinely caring, like when they sorted out a special drink for a youngster who wasn't feeling great—it really adds to the homely feel. The food's a highlight too; that chicken burger with its unique coleslaw is a winner, and while the pizzas and other options get good nods, it's clear they're putting effort into making meals that satisfy without breaking the bank. The events calendar is another plus—think lively pub quizzes, brunches, and even running meet-ups, which keep the place buzzing and give you plenty of reasons to return. On the flip side, though, some of the spicier dishes might catch you off guard if you're not a fan of intense heat, and a couple of reviews hinted that the burgers aren't living up to their old glory, which is a shame if you're chasing that perfect bite. Plus, with parking being a bit scarce, it might not be the easiest for a quick visit. All in all, it's a solid spot for a relaxed evening with mates, offering that balance of good times and a few minor niggles, so I'd say give it a go if you're in the area—it's got heart, and that's what makes a pub memorable.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely lovely and go the extra mile, like whipping up a special hot lemon with honey for someone feeling under the weather—it's those little touches that make you feel right at home.
  • The food hits the spot, with standout dishes like the chicken burger and its special coleslaw; it's hearty and flavoursome, perfect for a casual bite.
  • The atmosphere is spot on, whether you're chilling outside on a nice evening or enjoying the relaxed vibe inside—it's got that cosy, welcoming pub feel.
  • They've got a great lineup of events, from pub quizzes and brunches to running groups, so there's always something fun going on to keep things lively.
  • It's part of a chain that's clearly putting in effort with accessibility and private spaces, which is brilliant for groups or those with specific needs.
Cons
  • Some dishes, like the Angry Birds, can be seriously spicy—might be a bit much if you're not up for a real kick, even for those who enjoy a bit of heat.
  • A few folks have mentioned that certain items, such as the burger, aren't quite as exceptional as they used to be, so it might not wow everyone every time.
  • Parking is a tad limited, which could be a hassle if you're driving over, especially in a busy spot like Oxford.

The staff were very sweet and kind offering a special hot lemon with honey for our son who was under the weather. Food was actually pretty good specially the chicken burger which came with a special coleslaw and that made the difference. Service was quick and efficient and it has a few parking spots in the back so that was also a plus.

Great place as you would expect from a dodo pub. We spent the evening outside, lovely atmosphere and great food. The pizza was really good, the burger was average. I remember 5/6 years ago eating one of the best burgers I have had at the up in arms. They also had it available during lockdown as DIY at home with all the ingredients in a box. Would be great to have same quality back, I understand it was a choice down to cost but it could maybe be and extra options on menu at extra cost ? Great place overall we live nearby will deffo be back.

This is under new management and is a nice classy gig. The decor and atmosphere are superb and really relaxed. They are trying their hardest to implement accessibility initiatives within the constraints of their listed building.

The service was very nice and the food was good. If Caution is mentioned for the Angry Birds, take it serious. They are really hot, at least for Germans even if I like Habaneros. As beer I prefered the Dodo Lager. We habe been 2 night because we liked it.

Absolutely brilliant evening. Great atmosphere, delicious food and wonderful staff. I can’t wait to go back with a group of friends. I will also be recommending the room upstairs to my Oxford brides who might like to hold their engagement/wedding reception/parties in the private room. The vegan burger was a real treat, especially with the homemade onion relish… absolutely delicious! Thank you to all the team at The Slow and Steady. I look forward to seeing you all soon!
