About This Pub

Ah, The Grove – it's one of those Birmingham locals that you hear mixed things about, but overall, it's got that charm of a proper pub where you can pop in for a bite. From what I've gathered from the buzz around, the food really shines on its best days; people love the authentic Indian-inspired dishes and those mixed grills that pack a punch of flavour without costing a fortune. It's especially handy if you're heading to a Villa match or just fancy a laid-back afternoon with mates. The staff can be absolute gems, dishing out quick and friendly service that makes you feel right at home. But, let's be honest, it's not all pints and cheers – there are times when things fall flat, like when the team's not on form and you end up with staff who seem more interested in their phones than your order, or meals that don't quite live up to the hype with undercooked bits that leave a bad taste. Still, with a solid overall rep, it's worth giving it a go if you're in the area, just maybe check the mood before you dive in for that lunch special.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food here is often spot on, with folks raving about the authentic flavours and rich tastes, especially in their Indian dishes and mixed grills – it's a real treat for a hearty meal.
  • Service can be brilliant when it's good, with friendly staff who make you feel welcome and get things sorted quickly, perfect for a relaxed afternoon or match day.
  • Prices are pretty reasonable for what you get, making it a solid choice for a casual bite without breaking the bank.
Cons
  • Some visits have been let down by staff who seem a bit disinterested, like one person mentioned feet up on the bar while scrolling on their phone – not the warm welcome you'd hope for.
  • Food quality isn't always consistent; a few have complained about undercooked meat or dishes that look a bit sad, which is a shame when it can be so good otherwise.
  • Recent feedback shows it's had a few off days, with mixed experiences that might leave you wondering if it's worth the risk on a busy lunch hour.

Usually, the food here is great. I decided to order a mix grill for 1 for my lunch at 12:30 pm. It's £10, so it's not particularly cheap. As it was lunchtime, it was quiet, so they're not having a fast turnover of food. As I waited, I was wondering why I couldn't hear the meat cooking on the grill. I could hear what seemed to be the sound of a microwave. When I received my food (I ordered to takeaway), it was bland and chewy. It had obviously been defrosted/reheated in the microwave. The lamb and chicken pieces were so tough and dry, the wings were just about passable. I was so tempted to return it and ask for a refund. I should have gone with my gut feeling and gone to Peri Fino instead. So my advice is to avoid ordering during quiet lunchtime periods, as it seems they only give you left over reheated meat.

If I could give this place a 0 I would. Greeted by the worlds least captivating member of staff feet up on the bar on his phone. Food came in minutes and looked like it too. Anemic, sad, pathetic looking meat all round, even as a carnivore I felt sorry for the poor animals that died only to be served at The Grove. And I have barely left the toilet since departing. Avoid unless you like drab atmospheres, gormless workers, pathetic meals and sad drinks.

Food was incredibly excellent, tasted authentic and rich in flavour. Every item had its own distinct taste rather than food being all a blend of one flavour. Service was awesome with very friendly staff!

The best Indian bar and grill I’ve ever been too. We came on a quiet afternoon, was served quickly and all of the food was excellent. We can’t wait to come back again
