About This Pub

Ah, The Black Eagle – it's one of those Birmingham pubs that has that timeless appeal, you know, the kind where you can imagine settling in for a chat and a few pints with mates. From the reviews I've seen, the staff really shine; they're welcoming and make the place feel like a proper community hub. The beer selection is a highlight too, especially the cask ales, and it's all at prices that won't sting your wallet. Plus, if you're lucky with the timing, their Sunday roasts sound like a treat – generous portions and just the right amount of homely goodness to make your day. On the other hand, it's a bit gutting when the real ale isn't available, as that seems to be what draws folks in, and there have been times when food isn't an option at all, which could leave you hanging if you're after more than just drinks. Oh, and it's not the most straightforward to reach or contact, so you might need to plan ahead to avoid any hassles. All in all, it's got plenty going for it if you're up for a relaxed outing, but it's worth going in with your eyes open to those little shortcomings – still, I'd say it's a solid choice for a pint and a catch-up.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in
  • When the beers are flowing, there's a cracking selection of cask ales and other options that really hit the spot
  • Drinks are reasonably priced, so you won't break the bank for a good pint
  • The pub has a lovely atmosphere with different areas to relax in, plus a nice garden for when the weather's on your side
  • Their Sunday roasts are spot on – proper hearty meals that leave you satisfied and smiling
Cons
  • It's a real shame when the real ale pumps are off, as that seems to be a key draw that's not always reliable
  • Food options can be hit or miss; sometimes there's nothing on offer, which is a letdown if you're after a bite
  • Getting through on the phone is tricky, so booking or checking in advance might leave you frustrated
  • It's not the easiest spot to get to, often requiring a tram or a drive, which might put some off
  • There's a worry it could be heading downhill if these niggles aren't sorted, based on a few recent experiences

Disappointed. This pub has , for years, been a great place for real ale. Went today, 3 real ale pumps but all off. Without real ale this pub offers nothing. Not an easy place to get to, we went on the tram. It would be tragic to see this pub close but that's the way it's heading

We phoned 3 times to book a table on a Friday evening 08.11.24, nobody bothered to answer the phone. We thought the bar staff must be busy so we drove 5 miles to the pub and arrived at 7pm. We asked if we can order food, the two bar staff who were friendly, confirmed they don't do food. The bar staff and the only two customers in the Lounge suggested we could order the food from Soho Tavern (who I believe own the Black Eagle) and have it delivered by UberEats. We duly left to go elsewhere. I used to go to this pub quite often between 1990-1995 and was owned and run by three fantastic actors. The food was to die for. I would say, it was then one of the best pubs in the whole of Birmingham. However, if you are looking for food, it appears to be none existent and the photographs of food are months or years old. The website is misleading about food. I have given the one star due to the friendly staff but it you are looking for food here it is very hit and miss. Perhaps the owners should clarify their food policy rather than misleading customers and wasting their very precious time.

Had been in here once around 10 years ago and had a good time, was going past recently so thought I'd pop in again. Friendly and welcoming lady behind the bar, and I picked out a nice pint of HPA from the decent beer and cask ale selection. Reasonably priced too, I thought. I quite liked the classic pub ambience while I quietly enjoyed my pint.

Ace Sunday roast. Good service and a proper hot dinner. Got loads on my veggi plate. Would have posted a pic of my mates roast but it was eaten too quickly!

An Oasis in a sea of small industrial businesses, always enjoy a trip here, usually 2 or 3 cask ales available, pub is split into 3 drinking areas, with a bar, lounge and back room, there is also a large dining room used for private bookings, plus a nice garden to the side of the premesis. A 3 minute walk from Soho Benson Road tram stop.
