About This Pub

Ah, The Greyhound – it's one of those pubs that just wraps you up in its charm from the moment you step inside. Nestled in the picturesque village of Tong, this 16th-century gem has that timeless appeal with its cosy nooks and traditional vibes, perfect for sinking into a comfy chair with a pint of something local like their Saltaire Blond ale. The food's a real highlight; whether you're tucking into a hearty British classic or something a bit more adventurous, it's all done with care and comes out tasting spot on, especially at those wallet-friendly prices. The team behind the bar are absolute stars, always ready with a smile and happy to accommodate any requests, which makes it feel like you're chatting with old pals rather than just staff. It's brilliant for events too, with that community spirit shining through in things like cricket matches on the green. But, let's be fair, it's not without its quirks – you might have a spot of bother with parking if there's something on nearby, and the hours can vary, so it's worth checking ahead if you're aiming for a later evening. Overall, though, it's a welcoming spot that strikes a lovely balance between tradition and a good time, and I'd say it's well worth a visit for anyone looking to enjoy a proper pub experience without the fuss.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The cosy, historic atmosphere of this 16th-century inn really makes you feel right at home, with its old-school charm and proper pub vibes that hark back to traditional British hospitality.
  • The food is an absolute winner – from stacked burgers and British classics to international favourites, everything's freshly prepared and hits the spot, especially with those daily offers keeping things exciting.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and accommodating, always going the extra mile to make sure everyone's comfortable, whether you're popping in for a pint or hosting an event.
  • They've got a great selection of drinks, like local cask ales and new additions such as Saltaire Blond, paired with beautiful views of the countryside that make it a lovely spot to unwind.
  • It's well-priced for what you get, and the warm welcome extends to groups and families, making it ideal for a relaxed meal or catching up with mates.
Cons
  • Parking can be a bit of a hassle, especially during events like cricket matches, where you might end up parking further away to avoid any mishaps.
  • The operating hours seem a tad inconsistent at times, with some days wrapping up earlier than you'd expect, which could leave you out in the cold if you're planning a late-night visit.
  • Occasional seating issues, like glare from the sun streaming in, might mean shuffling around a bit to find the perfect spot, though the staff are quick to help out.

Great stop over, despite the fact that the cricket season had just started and the only place to park was in the car park near the cricket field. For fear of a ball hitting our motorhome, we parked in the garden centre about a mile along the road. Returned after 5pm, match was just finishing. Not a problem, though. We had a lovely meal and a couple of drinks. Really friendly staff, Will was a lovely lad, talked about our trips and where we had been, he said he had lived in Jesmond for several years which is a short distance from where we live. Lovely locals, got talking to them. Great atmosphere. Car park slightly sloping but not a problem. Quiet night and slept well. Totally recommend.

We recently returned to The Greyhound for our anniversary meal, a special tradition since our first date there three years ago. After last year's experience, we were thrilled to see such a remarkable transformation! The new decor and the warm hospitality from the landlady and landlord have truly revitalised the atmosphere. The pub was lively and bustling, which was wonderful to witness compared to last year. The food was simply outstanding—delicious, comforting dishes that felt like home. Our waitress, Emma, was an absolute delight—her fun and engaging personality added a special touch to our evening, making her a true asset to the team. We’re already looking forward to our next visit, not just for our anniversary, but to enjoy the wonderful vibe and excellent service again. A huge congratulations to Chris and Sarah for making The Greyhound a fantastic pub once more!

I always enjoy visiting the railway, this time I went with my Auntie, the landlady was very accommodating as we changed our seat a few times as the sun was streaming through the windows. The food was beautiful, we had Garlic and Thyme Chicken Breast with Chorizo croquettes, tenderstem broccoli and Stock Pot Carrots, the staff really friendly, it was lovely to see so many dog owners on there too. I will keep returning.

Amazing 🤩 We were received with a lovely warm welcome into this traditional village pub. There were 7 of us eating and every meal was 10/10. The staff were friendly and accommodating even for the fussy eater in the group 🙈 nothing was too much trouble It was very well priced and we even got a free dessert as it was a Monday, again all were fantastic. We could not fault this place at all. They even had the euros on ⚽️ The last time my parents had been in the pub was over 60 years ago when they were courting. My dad was so pleased to still see hand pulled beers such as Tetleys and other local brews. I also liked the attention to detail that the glass matched the drink you were having. My mum had a very happy 82nd birthday visiting here 🥳 Thank you Greyhound staff
