About This Pub
Ah, The Great Southern – it's one of those pubs that really pulls you in with its charm, isn't it? From what I've gathered chatting about it, the staff are just lovely; they're quick to make you feel at home, whether you're there for a group meal or a casual bite. I love how they handle things like special requests with such good humour, and the food? Well, it's often spot on – those roasts and fresh dishes like squid linguine have folks raving, and it's all at a moderate price that doesn't break the bank. The atmosphere is just right too, with sports on the screens if you're into that, and little extras like train updates that show they've thought of everything. But, let's be honest, it's not all beer and skittles; there have been a few grumbles about inconsistent experiences, like a photographer getting a bit too keen or a meal that didn't quite deliver on a bad day. Still, with such a solid overall feel, I'd say it's worth a visit – just keep your expectations in check and you'll likely have a grand time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant – friendly, attentive, and always ready to go the extra mile, like that chap Joe who handled a big group with ease and a smile.
-
The food is a real treat; think delicious roasts, spot-on squid linguine, and those steak nights that hit the spot, all served up with a nice touch.
-
It's got a welcoming atmosphere, whether you're popping in for a quiet lunch or catching the game on the screens – and they even show live train updates, which is dead handy.
-
The place is kept spotlessly clean, from the bar to the loos, making it feel like a proper cosy spot to relax.
Cons
-
There can be the odd mishap, like that intrusive photographer who doesn't take no for an answer, which might put a dampener on your night.
-
Food quality isn't always spot on; some visits turn into a bit of a letdown, such as when a usually reliable steak comes out all wrong.
-
It seems to have its off moments, especially with certain events or crowds, where things don't quite live up to the hype from previous trips.

Joe was great today, thank you! We were a group of 10 having roasts and had various different requests- he catered to these really well and provided great service. Thank you! We will be back! Roast was very tasty too!
I went to dance here my friend was the DJ, the last time I was here it was great. The pub staff were friendly and the atmosphere was Fantastic. This time they were the photographer who was awful just taking pictures of everyone even when you ask him not to take pictures he still took pictures in your face and having the laugh about it he got in the way of people dancing the camera lights with flashing in your eyes it was horrible. He thought he was a paparazzi taking pictures of Lady Gaga. Not a good night Because of him.
I've been in this pub more than ten times, always to eat and drink. Different occasions from birthday meals to just random pop in for a pretty good food.
I have always said, The Great Southern is on par with The Bull in Streatham which is awesome.
Unfortunately, today it was a SHOCKER!
Ordered Stake as well as Fish and Chips. Stake was cooked to my liking on the border of being overcooked. Peppercorn sauce was a tragedy. The sauce supposed to complement the stake. Instead of, it tasted like a molten lava. Too hot!!!
Now, to the main disaster, fish and chips.
Nonexistent beer batter. That fish had to be soaked in the oil, there's no other explanation, as the oil was still dripping from the fish. SOGGY!!!. Chips had a nice texture, but... the flavour was of all foods that have ever been thrown into the fryer, as if the oil wasn't changed for a year.
Went to pay, I thanked for the service, which is always good. Barman asked me. Was the food good?
I have asked him whether they have a new chef. He replied, yes.
He asked what's wrong.
Well... You know the story from above.
Unfortunately, it looks like this will be the last time we go to The Great Southern.
As The Great Southern has become The Great Disaster.
It's more than an hour later and after spending more than £40, I still have that appalling taste of the oil in my mouth and smell of it on my hands.
Not cool.
My son had this delicious Squid linguine for lunch - he said it was perfect! Spicy tom sauce!
I eventually got a taste and totally agree - delicious!! thank you
There's a new menu !
Just a few in for lunch but nice atmosphere.
Midweek evening 'steak night. Totally friendly, welcoming and attentive from beginning to end. Limited , reasonably priced menu. Food well presented and tasty. Spotless toilets and bar has several screens showing sports but not in any way intrusive. Wall monitor shows live updates for train departures at adjacent Rail station. Good range of beers . Very nice atmosphere. This is a must for a visit. Plenty of street parking available. Large outdoor space/garden for a fair weather visit.
