About This Pub

Ah, The Great Northern – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a breath of fresh air when you step inside. From what I've gathered from folks' experiences, the food really steals the show; that carvery at £10 is an absolute bargain, with top-notch quality that leaves you satisfied without breaking the bank. The staff are just lovely, always up for a chat and making sure everything runs smoothly, which adds to that warm, community feel. It's got a genuine, unpretentious atmosphere too, far from the sterile chains, so if you're after a proper pub experience with a good pint in hand, this one's a winner. On the flip side, though, some drinks prices do feel a bit steep – that orange and lemonade at almost £5 might make you think twice before ordering extras. And while the food's great, the lack of hot plates can be a minor niggle, especially if you're with a crowd and things cool down quicker than you'd like. All in all, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together; just go in with realistic expectations, and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely delicious, especially the carvery which offers fantastic value at just £10 – it's a real treat for the taste buds.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • It has a lovely, authentic atmosphere that's not been overly commercialised, giving it that proper traditional pub charm.
  • There's a great selection of beers, and it's in a brilliant spot if you're up for a walk afterwards to work off those calories.
Cons
  • Drinks can be a bit on the steep side, like paying nearly £5 for an orange and lemonade, which might catch you off guard.
  • They don't have hot plates for the food, which could make things a tad inconvenient, especially for bigger groups.

Lovely food, friendly staff . Although £4.90 for an orange and lemonade is a bit steep considering the carvery was £10 . However it was nice .

At £10 for a standard carvery, it is fantastic value. I paid £13.50 last week at another pub for the same high-quality. It has a great atmosphere as it has not been commercialised in sterilised by some chain. Plenty of good points, and the one minus is no hot plates. But the friendly staff did offer to give it a quick microwave, problem solves. Friendly staff, good food and clean, what more could you want?
