About This Pub

Ah, The Friar Penketh, that trusty Wetherspoon spot in Warrington – it's got that familiar feel of a good old pub where you can pop in for a pint without spending a fortune. I reckon it's brilliant for those laid-back days when you want something simple and wallet-friendly; the staff really shine through in the reviews, with folks raving about the welcoming bar team who go the extra mile to make you feel at ease, especially if you're a Wednesday regular with the grandkids. And let's not forget the odd menu gem, like that delicious noodle soup that's a real treat if you're trying to keep things healthy. But, to be fair, it's not without its downsides – some have had a wait that's longer than expected for food, even on quieter mornings, and the place can look a bit neglected with tables cluttered and staff not always on top form. Overall, it's a solid choice for a casual catch-up over cheap drinks, as long as you go in with realistic expectations and aren't after anything too fancy. If you're a fan of Wetherspoons, you'll probably enjoy the vibe, but it might not wow you if you're seeking top-notch service or spotless surroundings.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff can be really lovely and welcoming, like those friendly bar team members who make you feel right at home, especially if you're a regular.
  • Prices are spot on for a Wetherspoon – inexpensive and great for a casual budget-friendly night out without breaking the bank.
  • Some menu items are a hit, like that tasty noodle soup that's perfect if you're after something light and flavoursome.
Cons
  • Service might drag on a bit, with food taking over 30 minutes even when it's not busy, so it's not ideal if you're in a rush.
  • The place can get messy with tables left piled up with dishes, and the overall cleanliness isn't always up to scratch.
  • Food quality can be hit or miss – think mediocre at best, like struggling with something as simple as frying an egg.

An absolutely fine Wetherspoons. It was a pretty quiet Sunday morning but food took over 30 mins to arrive.

By far the worst Spoons that I've ever been in, and I've been in a lot! The food was mediocre at best, who can't fry an egg? The service was shocking, and the place was filthy with around half of the tables piled up with dishes. It wasn't even busy, the staff just weren't at all interested in cleaning the place, apart from one girl who properly cleared and cleaned a table for us, she was the only one doing anything to rectify the mess. Absolutely shocking. Photos have been sent to head office.

I go here almost every Wednesday with my Grandson for dinner. There are 2 young ladies that work behind the bar and take my food order. Just want to say how lovely and friendly they both are. Honestly, they are a credit to you and my Grandson loves seeing them.

I am doing a fruit and vegetable diet and was wondering if I would find something "nice" to eat here. I ordered a noodle soup which was so delicious. It was really really tasty. Very glad we stopped here for a bite to eat.

A bit disappointing. I went to what was one of the best Wetherspoons in Warrington centre but it was one that had been sold, post Brexit. I walked half a mile to another and a big screen showing football was on at one end (not for me, thanks) so I got a coffee and went to the far side of the bar. The coffee (shown) was supposed to be a milky coffee, but was strong, black. The tables were strewn with menus and food debris and an open bottle of vinegar. I ordered food using the app. A glass of apple juice was plonked unceremoniously on the table, without so much as a grimace. It had ice which I had specifically requested to 'remove', as it affects my teeth. I shouted the waitress back but she ignored me. The food (jacket potato and tuna mayonnaise) arrived without the table being cleared or cleaned, and was generous in proportions, but the salad had seen better days.
