About This Pub
Oh, let me tell you about The French House – it's one of those Soho spots that just feels special from the moment you step inside. I love how it's kept things simple and timeless, with no blaring music or screens to interrupt a good natter, making it ideal for catching up with mates over a glass of something fabulous. The food upstairs in the restaurant is a standout; think mouthwatering French dishes like turbot or steak, all prepared with real care, and paired with an impressive wine list that could keep you there for hours. It's got that buzzing, intimate energy where you might rub shoulders with creative types, which adds a fun layer to the visit. On the flip side, though, it's a small place, so getting a reservation can be a right faff – you'll want to book well in advance or risk missing out. And for drinks downstairs, it's all about turning up early, as there's no reserving spots, which might not suit everyone on a packed evening. All in all, it's a gem for a relaxed, sophisticated outing, but just be prepared for its quirks if you're after something more straightforward.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The atmosphere is absolutely charming and historic, making it a perfect spot for a cosy chat without any distractions like music or TVs.
-
The food is top-notch, with delicious French dishes that leave you wanting more, especially the specials on the chalkboard menu.
-
They've got an incredible selection of champagnes and wines by the glass, which really elevates the experience for a relaxed afternoon or evening.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, adding to that warm, homely feel that's so inviting in the heart of Soho.
Cons
-
It's a bit of a challenge to secure a table in the restaurant, as it's small and bookings fill up quickly – you might need to plan well ahead.
-
The no-reservation policy for drinks means it's first come, first served, so you could end up waiting if it's busy.
-
Given its intimate size, it's not ideal for larger groups; you're limited to about six people, which might cramp plans for a bigger get-together.
-
The rules on no mobile phones and such make it wonderfully focused, but it might feel a tad restrictive if you're not in the mood for pure conversation.

What a place. Good was delicious. I had the turbot & my friend the pigeon. We ended up relaxing & spending the whole afternoon drinking & chilling. Beautiful restaurant & pub downstairs.
I’ve wanted to visit the French House for years but it is hard to get a reservation. This place is an institution in SoHo, and rightly slow.
This place has a nice small cosy feel with a buzzing atmosphere. Good for small groups for any occasion.
There is a daily menu with a range of French dishes. We shared ours and every course was delicious. This was complimented with excellent service. I would definitely recommend the French House.
Great pub on the ground floor but the real star of the show is the restaurant located just up the stairs on the first floor.
This historical, one-room restaurant offers up delicious French fare and fantastic wines in a charming setting.
The chalk board menu of specials, friendly staff and inviting atmosphere make this a worthwhile endeavor.
We enjoyed fresh oysters, a delicious sourdough bread with sea salt encrusted butter, seasonal British asparagus in a savory Hollandaise, an 8oz rump steak and some of the best crispy chips I’ve had in a long time.
This restaurant continues to deliver and with good reason.
Some classics never go out of style!
The French House is one of them.
P.S Don’t forget to order the warm, homemade madeleines!! 🧑🍳
This is a gem of a place!
I managed to walk in for lunch on a Thursday. So fortunate.
I had a champagne and white negroni to start my meal. The started was Foie gras and Chicken liver on a brioche bread. Yummy!
The main was a rump steak medium rare! Cooked to perfection.
It was just a wonderful luncheon!
Wanted to eat here for ages, managed to book in yesterday and what can I say. Great atmosphere intimate restaurant. Staff were amazing and the food was exceptional.
