About This Pub

Ah, The Fish and Eels – it's one of those classic country pubs that really captures the essence of a relaxed British outing. Tucked away in Hoddesdon near the river, it's got this lovely history dating back to the 1800s, and you can just imagine settling in for a pint by the water or warming up by a crackling log fire on a cooler day. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is spot on with those hearty favourites and seasonal twists that always go down well, and it's fantastic for dog owners since it's so welcoming to furry friends. The terrace is a real highlight on a sunny evening, perfect for soaking up the scenery while enjoying a limoncello spritz or a fine ale. But, let's be honest, it's not all smooth sailing – some folks have had mixed experiences with the service, where one minute you're getting top-notch attention and the next it's a bit lacklustre, like when they run out of things or the team seems off their game. Still, with an overall solid rating, it's worth popping in for the atmosphere and views, especially if you're exploring the Lea Valley area. Just keep in mind that, like any pub, it has its off days, so maybe go with an open mind and you'll likely have a cracking time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The riverside setting is absolutely gorgeous, making it a brilliant spot for a relaxing meal or drinks outdoors.
  • It's wonderfully dog-friendly, ideal if you're out for a country walk and fancy a pit stop with your four-legged mate.
  • The menu offers hearty pub classics and seasonal dishes that hit the spot, with a good selection of cask ales, wines, and gins to boot.
  • Some of the staff are really attentive and friendly, like the ones mentioned in reviews who made guests feel right at home.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit inconsistent, with some experiences feeling rushed or unenthusiastic, which puts a damper on things.
  • There have been issues with items running out or general disappointments, like in a few reviews where the evening didn't live up to expectations.
  • Not every visit is seamless, as a couple of folks noted subpar service that left them feeling let down.

We visited for Father’s Day weekend as my Dad had always driven past & always wanted to eat here as it’s such a beautiful setting so I booked a table. It was a warm evening & absolutely glorious out on the terrace. Unfortunately we could tell it wasn’t going to be the best evening when our table wasn’t ready at our booked time, the waitresses seemed a little flustered. We waited well over an hour for our main dishes which was disappointing - we had asked that it all come out together which the waitresses seemed a advised, but this communication must have got lost as we had to ask the staff a few times where our food was which doesn’t equal a relaxing evening when you feel like you’re pestering the staff. The food, when it came was lovely, so no complaints there, just the time it took wasn’t justified. We complained about this & the lovely waitress, Remy did manage to get us a large discount off of our bill - definitely justified. We then decided to have coffee & afters out on the beautiful terrace. We wish we hadn’t bothered - only two desserts came out, minus the custard for one of them. The other two desserts were missing & arrived about 30 minutes later. Cold coffees followed… a lovely waiter, Ollie went & got us fresh hot coffees when we had to complain again. The coffee & dessert was over £40, so we were not letting that go. So disappointed as the place is gorgeous, just so unorganised so we won’t be going back or recommending this to anyone sadly as we left rather stressed & not relaxed as we should have done!

We had a lovely meal and our waitress Remy was fantastic from the start to the finish. She welcomed us to our table with a smile and was very professional. She made sure no one had any allergies before taking our order and told us what the restaurant didn’t have left while giving us our menus. This was very handy so we didn’t get let down. She made sure our drinks were always full and if we were satisfied with our meal throughout. She even went that step above to put a candle on my wife’s dessert for a belated birthday meal, which was a lovely surprise. Just from the fantastic service we will most definitely be returning. A big shout out to Chloe the waitress too who was helping out and made us all laugh!

We had a very disappointing evening in here tonight. It is not often that we get to go out, and we were looking forward to spending our money on our nice meal, but this place fell so short in all aspects. While one of the waitresses was smiley, the others were not, and the service was dreadful. We booked the table for 7.30, arrived on time and waited 10 minutes to be shown to our table (the indoor bit where we were sitting was pretty empty). At around 7.50 our order was taken, and it was not until 8.15 that our Pepsis and starters came to the table (bar was 10m away from the table). Our starters were finished at about 8.25 and our main courses were brought at 8.50 while our dirty plates were still on the table. No apologies were given for the time taken or the fact that we still had items on the table. I went to the bar to order more drinks as this was also not asked. The food itself was really bad - the burger was cooked to death, the salad was disgusting and the chicken on the salad was as dry as my shoe’s leather. To top it all off, it was not as described - the gem lettuce was replaced by a bitter leaf salad bag mix. To top this all off, it was not cheap. We paid £75 for the lot, which was a rip off considering the circumstances. I really do not recommend this place for dinner or drinks. Stay clear

Had a lovely day on terrace. Thank you so much to the lovely serving staff, I only caught Luella’s name but all staff we encountered were delightful. Food was delicious and highly recommend the limoncello spritz.

Excellent destination pub. Fanatic view by the canal and dog friendly. Food was reasonably priced and quality is of a good standard. Well worth a visit even just for a few drinks or coffee by the canal.
