About This Pub

You know, I've got to say, the Duke of Edinburgh really hits the mark for a relaxed night out or a comfortable overnight stay in Barrow-in-Furness. From what folks are saying, the rooms are spot on – clean, warm, and spacious, with those deluxe options making the shower feel like a proper treat after a long day. The food's another highlight; whether it's the free breakfast that's included when you book direct or those hearty Sunday lunches, everything comes out delicious and well-prepared, with staff going the extra mile to make sure you're happy. It's in such a handy location too, right in the town centre, making it easy to explore or just unwind with a craft beer in the bar. On the flip side, I have to mention that the place might be temporarily closed or have some uncertainty around its hours, so you'd want to double-check that before heading over. Plus, with its historic Victorian charm, it has that old-school feel which is lovely but could mean a few things aren't as sleek as in newer spots. All in all, it's a solid choice if you're after good value and a friendly atmosphere – I'd definitely recommend giving it a go for a pint or a stay, as long as you keep those little niggles in mind.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The rooms are lovely and comfortable, with clean, tidy spaces and amazing showers that make you feel right at home.
  • The food is absolutely delicious – from the award-winning breakfast that's complimentary when you book direct, to fantastic Sunday lunches and well-cooked meals like burgers and steaks.
  • Service is top-notch; the staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive, making every visit feel personal and enjoyable.
  • It's in a great spot in the centre of Barrow-in-Furness, just a short walk from the train station, with easy access and even a private car park.
  • Prices are brilliant value, especially compared to some nearby chains – you get luxury without breaking the bank, and it's a steal for the quality on offer.
Cons
  • The operating status seems a bit unclear, as it's listed as closed, which might mean it's not always open when you'd hope, so it's worth checking ahead.
  • Being in an iconic Victorian building, some parts might feel a tad outdated or quirky, like the preserved staircase, which could be less convenient for those wanting everything super modern.
  • Without specific operating hours available, it can be tricky to plan a visit, especially if you're popping in for a quick drink or meal.

Lovely comfortable, well appointed rooms. Delicious food. Great selection in the bar. Great service. Almost half the price of the nearby chain 'Inn' that my company keep dumping me in. My new go-to while in Barrow.

We loved our stay at the Duke of Edinburgh. Staff were very friendly and helpful, location was great, we walked everywhere, our room was comfortable and quiet and serviced every day. There’s a lift. The lift was installed around the a staircase that is very old and preservation of it was important. There is a pub downstairs that serves great food and delicious bubbles and cocktails and of course, beer. Many types of beer. Our included breakfast on the last day was delicious and varied. As well as what is available on the breakfast menu they offer pastries, jams etc. All in all a good stay.

We have been coming here for the past couple of months for a Sunday Lunch. Service is fantastic both bar staff and waiting on staff are very attentive and well mannered. The Dinner is absolutely gorgeous, cannot fault anything! Such a good price with drinks. You would think you were in a city, lovely restaurant.

Staff were friendly and the food was great. My teenager had the Make it Biggar Burger and ate the whole lot, as it was so good, and my husband enjoyed the locally sourced sausage trio. I asked for my steak to be rare, and rare is what I got... well done that chef!

The Duke is great accommodation especially for a short stay, the rooms are clean, tidy, warm and the deluxe rooms are worth it! The shower is amazing and it is very spacious. The staff are warm, welcoming and incredibly hospitable. Book your room including breakfast, the chef does a great full veggie breakfast. The halloumi is *chef's kiss* It is located in the centre of the city right next to the railway station and if you drive parking is next door.
