About This Pub

Ah, The Duke of Cumberland – it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of Kendal with its quirky vibe and neighbourhood feel. I have to say, the beer garden stands out as a real highlight; it's massive, with room for over 150 seats and those inviting cabins equipped with fire pits, making it ideal for enjoying a craft beer or a cheeky cocktail outdoors. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a chat and super helpful, which makes the whole experience feel warm and inviting – and it's brilliant that they welcome dogs and even overnight stays for campervans if you're grabbing a meal. Drinks are reasonably priced too, which is always a win when you're out for a relaxed evening. On the flip side, though, the food can be a mixed bag; some rave about the burgers, but others have mentioned disappointments with things like the fish and chips, and it's a shame the vegan choices are a bit slim, even if the team bends over backwards to accommodate. Still, with its lively atmosphere and that 4.0 rating from plenty of visitors, it's worth a visit if you're in the area – just keep an eye on the smoking areas and maybe book ahead to snag a prime spot. All in all, it's a solid choice for a good night out, with the pros definitely outweighing the cons for most.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer garden is an absolute gem, with space for loads of folks and those cosy cabins with fire pits – perfect for a sunny day or a chilly evening al fresco.
  • Friendly staff who really make you feel at home; they're always cheerful and accommodating, whether you're with a furry friend or just popping in for a pint.
  • A cracking selection of craft beers, cask ales, and cocktails, plus affordable drinks that won't break the bank – like a pint of Guinness and a large wine for under £9.
  • It's great for those on the road; they welcome dogs and even let campervans stay overnight if you're dining, adding a nice touch of convenience.
Cons
  • Some outdoor areas are smoking zones, which can be a bit off-putting if you're after a fresh-air experience without the haze.
  • Food can be hit or miss; while some dishes are spot on, others like the fish and chips have let a few down with things like thick, frozen chips.
  • The vegan options are a tad limited, though the team does their best to help out with dietary needs.
  • There's a non-refundable £5 fee for booking a cabin, which might feel a bit steep just for the fire pit.

Stopped enroute to the lakes. Large outdoor area, but sadly all smoking tables. Really nice inside with good decor etc. Very friendly staff. Music just bearable, sat inside and it was warm and pleasant. I was perusing the menu for food, when suddenly at 4.30, for no apparent reason someone upped the music volume to an insane level!! It literally shocked me into spilling my drink. It was unbearable. I could not wait to get out of the place. Dog friendly but definitely NOT eardrum friendly!! Music even permeated to the outside area. Such a shame. I won't be back.

Godfather burger was fantastic, motorhomes welcome to stay overnight if you eat in the pub. Arrived at 1, parked up, wandered into Kendall, had a few drinkies, (pint of Guinness and large wine was under £9), nothing to add to that 😂 Back to Duke for evening meal, with another few drinkies. Back to motorhome for a decent night's sleep. Cushtie.

Excellent pub with an excellent beer garden but the food wasn't.first time I've been here and was really impressed with everything.friendly staff and one of the best beer gardens I've been in but my fish and chips were a big letdown.Thick cut frozen chips which I didn't enjoy at all and the fish wasn't much better.it didn't even look right to me but tasted just about ok.peas were nice tho and my wife did enjoy her scampi and chips.she had no complaints at all..I would come back here but I'll definitely be trying a meal that doesn't come with chips

Wow...we went for an evening meal and enjoyed the food that much we went back for a 2nd night. The staff were really friendly and the pub itself is really nice. We sat in an outside booth and took advantage of the fire pit which is a great idea. Would 100% recommend this place.
