About This Pub
So, I was having a look at The Crag Inn the other day, and it's got this cracking location right in the heart of Wildboarclough, which is just ideal if you're into countryside walks or exploring the Macclesfield area. The views are spot on, and it's got that dog-friendly charm that makes it feel welcoming for a casual stop-off. Plus, if you're a fan of cask ale, they've got some local options that sound like they'd hit the spot nicely. On the downside, though, it's only open on Sundays for a few hours, which is a real pity because it limits your chances to pop in. From the reviews I've seen, it's seeming a bit neglected – people mention it looking run down and dirty, with no food available and not much variety in drinks. Service has been hit or miss too, with some saying it's not very friendly. All in all, it's got potential to be a lovely little hideaway, but it needs a bit of TLC to shine. If you're nearby on a Sunday and in the mood for a simple pint with a view, give it a go, but don't get your hopes up for a full-on pub experience.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The location is absolutely stunning, tucked away in the beautiful Wildboarclough countryside, making it a perfect spot for a relaxing pint after a walk.
-
It's dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out with your four-legged mate and want a welcoming place to stop.
-
They serve cask ale and some local beers, which can be a real treat for anyone who appreciates a good, traditional brew.
Cons
-
It's only open on Sundays from 12 to 4, which feels a bit restrictive if you're hoping for a spontaneous visit during the week.
-
From what folks have said, the place looks a tad run down and not very inviting, with reports of it being dirty and unkempt.
-
There's no food on offer, and drink choices are limited, which might leave you wanting more after a long day out.
-
Prices can come across as a bit steep, and service isn't always up to scratch based on recent feedback.

Such a waste of a beautifully located public house… run down, dirty, and looking like a back yard business is outside.
Hardly open and no food but to be honest it’s not at all inviting,
However if you’re into mineral water this could suit.
The spring water in the area is apparently special and so I guess that’s where the focus is. But although the company van looks pretty and clean it’s the only thing that is.
The owners are missing out on so much here … why not clean up, offer delicious local ale and food and keep customers coming back rather than walking past thinking ‘aw now where do we go’ … it’s several miles to the next pub and if you’re walking (as I was) this would be on the list of hostelries.
The area of Wildboarclough is stunningly beautiful with plenty of history to attract visitors.
Come on all at The Crag .. serve your ale and a small varied menu and we’ll support you.
We visited on a bank holiday hoping to have lunch after a walk nearby. We were told they weren't doing food. We were then told they had no soft drinks on tap, and offered either vimto or coke. The prices were quite expensive. The pub looked very run down. It seems from looking online they also do water tasting which I did not experience so can't comment on. I feel the website should be clearer to explain they don't do food and have a ridiculously small range of drinks. Do not visit if wanting a pub experience as in my opinion this place should not be able to call itself a pub.
Well a far cry to what it used to be 😥 gutted .. so used to it being a thriving walkers and mtb paradise a well earned rest it is NOT .. run down .. no warming fire .. no draught beers .. no food .. no customers .. no customer service .. Mr No even said NO to putting the kettle on for a Cup of Coffee (felt so sorry for the young guy behind the bar he was lovely) ..
Mr No apparently is a water sommelier now .. good luck with that you will need all the water you can get to clean your act up (and the toilets need cleaning) 🤣👍 .. and why have you just changed your Google Name after I have posted this review 🤪
I rarely give five stars but on this occasion it is because I admire a pub which is trying very hard and deserves our custom! It's a remote Country pub serves cask ale and tries to cater for food requests.
The pub is dog friendly and on a great walk from Macclesfield Forest.
Understandably during winter months opening times are limited currently not open Monday / Tuesday other days 12-15.00 so I suggest you check first.
However the wincle beer is excellent so go & try!!
This is a hidden gem great beers some of which are local. And the food is mint. A dog welcome place.staff are very nice and friendly. In a amazing place
Love this place.
