About This Pub
Ah, the Hanging Gate Inn – what a gem it is, tucked away in the hills near Macclesfield. I have to say, it's one of those places that really sticks with you; the views alone are enough to make any visit worthwhile, especially from that beer garden where you can gaze out over the plains on a clear day. The staff are just lovely, always up for a chat and making sure everyone feels welcome, which adds to the homely vibe of this old drovers pub with its cosy fires and traditional features. They've got a solid range of drinks too, from local ales to wines that pair nicely with the rural setting. On the flip side, though, it's a bit of a double-edged sword being out in the sticks – the limited opening times, particularly in the colder months, mean you might have to plan around it, and there's always that chance it could shut early if it's quiet. Still, if you're up for a proper country pub experience, it's well worth the effort; just give them a ring first to avoid any surprises. All in all, it's a top spot for a relaxed get-together with friends, as long as you're prepared for its quirks.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The views from this pub are absolutely stunning, stretching across the Cheshire Plain and even as far as North Wales – perfect for a relaxing pint with a scenic backdrop.
-
The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in, just like chatting with old mates.
-
It's got that real rustic charm with low beams, stone floors, and roaring fires, all wrapped up in a 400-year-old history that gives it so much character.
-
They offer a great selection of drinks, including local cask ales, wines, and spirits, which are reasonably priced and add to the authentic pub experience.
-
The atmosphere is spot on for families, walkers, and outdoor enthusiasts, with a large beer garden that's ideal for soaking up the countryside vibes.
Cons
-
Opening hours are quite limited, especially in the autumn and winter when it's closed most days, which might leave you disappointed if you're planning a spontaneous visit.
-
Due to its rural location, it can be a bit of a trek to get there, and they might close early on quiet evenings without much notice, so it's worth checking ahead.
-
In the quieter months, the place can feel a tad isolated, and with rising costs, they have to cut back, which means it's not always buzzing with activity.

Stopped off for a pint yesterday with my wife, dog and soon to arrive baby. This place is fantastic. Really polite staff, view from the pub was amazing, food smelt incredible (didn’t try any but will do next time), toilets were extremely clean, hawkstone on draft was a welcomed surprise. Felt extremely welcomed and the lady behind the bar was very nice to us. Thank you for a lovely pint and can’t wait to come back.
Well it’s a piece of paradise just 10 minutes from Macclesfield town centre. It has breathtaking views of sunsets and their handcrafted wine selection is point-on.
Absolutely a must visit!
Probably the most scenic view a pub could have!! We have been for the first time today , had some great food here and nice drinks too .
Nice selection of drinks ,selling local beers and spirits too.
The staff was very friendly and welcoming,we will deffinetley return .
Visited here whilst staying nearby. Hillary and her partner (I didn't catch his name) were really welcoming and friendly.
The views are unmatched and are incredible. The drinks were nice and reasonably priced. The locals were also friendly and seemed welcoming. It was good to be a part of their local community, even if it was just for a short while.
The owners here have got big plans for the pub, so it will be good to see how they get on. Good luck and all the best for the future!
(Also, the black cat made my evening!)
Called in here on Sunday, when passing by bike on an incredibly hot day. Not been there in 50 years ( seriously). What a great place - it has been beautifully renovated, the service was friendly and welcoming. The only problem I had was that after a pint of the excellent beer on offer, I wanted another! Judging by my very small sample the prices seemed more than reasonable too.
The solid stone walls and an open window made it feel like it was fitted with very powerful airconditioning.
I must try and get back a little more frequently!
