About This Pub

Ah, The Colney Fox – it's one of those pubs that really captures the essence of a traditional British spot, with its ivy-covered walls and a history stretching back who knows how far. I have to say, the food is a highlight; those hearty menus packed with pub favourites like burgers and steaks are just brilliant, and from what I've seen in the reviews, it's spot on for a satisfying meal. The staff often go the extra mile, making you feel right at home, which is lovely for a casual catch-up with mates. Plus, with the gardens and log fires, it's perfect for a sunny afternoon stroll or a rainy evening in. On the flip side, it's not all smooth sailing – a couple of reviews mentioned timing issues with the food, like mains turning up before you've even tucked into your starter, and some starters falling a bit short of expectations. Still, overall, it's a solid choice for us pub enthusiasts; just keep in mind it might not be the place for a super formal dinner, but for good vibes and a decent bite, it's well worth a visit.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – think hearty classics like burgers, katsu curry, and perfectly cooked steaks that leave you wanting more.
  • Service can be brilliant, with friendly staff like Erin or that young waiter who really make you feel welcome and add a personal touch.
  • It's got such a charming atmosphere, with beautiful gardens, cosy log fires, and a rich history that makes it feel like a proper country escape.
  • Dog-friendly vibes make it ideal for a relaxed day out, whether you're walking along the River Colne or just popping in for a pint.
Cons
  • Service isn't always flawless; some folks have mentioned mains arriving too quickly before starters are finished, which can throw off the meal.
  • A few dishes, like the starters, might not hit the mark every time, based on what I've heard from others.
  • It can get a bit self-service in places, like fetching your own cutlery, which isn't ideal if you're after a more attentive experience.

This was my first visit here, and it won't be my last. The service was fantastic, served by Erin, who was very friendly. We order the signature burger and katsu curry dishes, both fab and would have again. The food, service and atmosphere is so lovely. We look forward to visiting again soon. Well done to all the team here, especially Erin.

Update 2025: SLAM DUNK festival sees us visiting for a third year in a row, amazing as always. Really love stopping here the weekend! Another year on and we had the time of our lives hereUpdate 2024: 1 year later and the FOX has smashed it out the park again! Everything is easy to arrange, the staff are all on the case and the selection of beers and wines and spirits keeps a constant purr of happy punters through the bar. We stayed for two nights and they looked after us like old friends. The garden was well lit and, when it got a little chilly later in the evening the heat lamps were very welcome. There is a LOT of lovely local bird life if that's your thing. We saw pigeons, sparrows, wrens, crows, jackdaws, Robins, gulls and two giant buzzards.... Possibly a kite too circling way overhead. Highly recommend this place it's like a little oasis and an ideal base if you're going to SLAM DUNK! Also the breakfast is cracking. I'd annihilated most of it before I thought I should take a snap. Those sausages are ACE. 2023: Stayed the weekend FOR SLAM DUNK festival and we had a great time here at the Fox. Chilled drinks the evening before and a quality breakfast each morning to set you up for the day. Staff very professional, friendly and polite and handled us gently the morning after, which I was really appreciative for, along with the extended check out hours! Thanks to all the team at the Fox, who made us very welcome, we'll see you again next year!

A really nice and huge pub. This was our first time at this pub. We loved it. The food was very good, especially my rib eye steak because it was cooked to perfection. Our young waiter was the highlight, as he had the right amount of rapport combined with a want to provide a great service. And he did!

Judging by the more negative reviews I read after our visit we got off light. Our service was ok, but our mains were served before one of our party had finished their starter, and no condiments were offered or brought. We could see cutlery needed to be got ourselves but no mention we had to get our own salt and pepper too. And cutlery was brought with the desserts so it was a little confused what we ordered the staff were meant to doing. The seats half of them had bird shit on their backs. The mains were good. The starters average. My prawn cocktail came with bread but no butter or margarine I had to ask for it. The desserts were mixed..I had the tiramisu as did my husband but it was only described as tiramisu. It was not. It was sponge cake, with a narrow band of filling and the same on top of the sandwich..Zero coffee or chocolate flavour even on the brown sauce zig zagged sort of on the plate. No boozey flavour either. The cream accompaniment was a tablespoon at best. Not enough to make this dry bland tasting sponge cake edible and the top sponge took the place of where there should have been more mascarpone. It was the most teeny sliver of mascarpone possible in middle and on top about half to 3/4 a cm deep. See picture of the sponge I left from my portion of 'tiramisu'.

Very cosy pub to spend a Saturday/Sunday lunchtime hour. Had a lovely lunch time meal there which we enjoyed. The mains we had were absolutely delicious and clearly a winner. The fish and chips and the steak especially were really good! The kitchen though was let down by the starters…the three we tried were quite disappointing. Tiny portions, cheap fried food, and generally felt very sub par so I would encourage the establishment to look into their starters menu. Overall vibe and ambience of the place was alright. Very lukewarm, the tables are quite cramped, there was no music playing in the background so could get very loud when families with very excitable children were making a mess of the place.
