About This Pub
Ah, let me tell you about The Coat and Bear – it's this lovely Georgian spot right in the thick of Newbury, and from what I've gathered from the buzz around it, it's got that perfect mix of old-school charm and modern comforts. I mean, the food alone is a winner; folks are raving about the Sunday roasts with juicy beef, cheesy cauliflower, and all the trimmings done just right, or those evening meals that come with great cocktails and feel like proper value for your money. The rooms sound like a dream too, all boutique-style with roll-top baths and thoughtful extras that make you feel pampered, whether you're there for a quick overnight or a longer stay. And it's brilliant for families or if you're travelling with a dog, as they've got packs for the little ones and goodies for your furry mate. On the flip side, it's a shame it's showing as closed right now, so you'd definitely want to confirm it's open before you go, and with it being in such a lively spot, it can get heaving, which might not suit if you're after a quiet evening. All in all, though, it's got that warm, welcoming feel that makes it a top pick for a night out or a relaxed getaway – I'd say give it a try if you're in the area, as long as you plan ahead!
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The food is absolutely spot on – think delicious Sunday roasts with perfectly cooked beef and tasty sides, or hearty evening meals that hit the spot every time.
-
Rooms are a treat, with stylish decor, comfy beds, and lovely touches like coffee machines, chocolates, and even goodie bags for dogs – makes you feel right at home.
-
Staff are top-notch, always attentive and friendly, whether you're popping in for a drink or staying overnight.
-
It's super dog-friendly and family-oriented, with things like activity packs for kids and a welcoming vibe for four-legged friends.
-
Great location in the heart of Newbury, easy to get to, and it feels like a proper cosy spot in a bustling town.
Cons
-
It's listed as closed at the moment, so you'd want to double-check the latest status before heading over, as that could put a dampener on plans.
-
Being in a busy area, it might get a bit crowded, especially during peak times, so booking ahead is probably a must to avoid disappointment.
-
As a relatively new place, it's hard to say how it'll hold up over time – the reviews are glowing so far, but consistency is always something to keep an eye on.

Newly renovated stylish luxury hotel in the heart of Newbury. We chose it because it was dog-friendly.
We loved the sumptuous room with roll-top bath and thoughtful touches such as coffee machine, chocolates and dog goodie bag.
Had a fabulous evening meal in the restaurant/bar downstairs, first class service and excellent menu choice.
This was our first visit to the town and we enjoyed walks along the canal and wandering the town. In all, faultless service and a very special treat for a night away. Recommend highly.
I can't fault this establishment. Booking was straightforward. Check in was fast and the room was delightful with really nice attention to detail. We had an evening meal in the pub which was good value, great selection and very good quality. The staff in the bar were attentive and the cocktails were great. The breakfast selection was varied and beautiful served. 10 out of 10 looking at other heartwood inns for my next little break.
Absolutely fantastic Sunday roast at the coat and bear this past weekend. The food was perfect - some of the best roast beef I’ve ever had. Super cheesy cauliflower cheese and a lovely assortment of veg cooked perfectly. Nice to have beetroot, and red onions as well as the classic roast potatoes and carrots. Lovely to have a glass of complimentary Prosecco for Mother’s Day and a nice touch to give some spring potted flowers for mums.
This trip exceeded our expectations and we will definitely visit again. Everything had been thought of from the free guest parking to the activity pack in the room for my son. The rooms and general decor of the hotel was fantastic. The interiors and furniture are beautiful. The pub was buzzing even at 6:30pm and the atmosphere was great. So many great options on the menu and the quality of food was fantastic. I have zero negative comments to make. Highly recommend. Thanks for a great stay!
Escaped here for a weekend and had a fantastic time. The room was amazing with a couple of welcoming and personal touches waiting for us. The hotel itself has only been open 3 months and it's been stunningly renovated. Enjoyed a really tasty 3 course meal on Saturday night, along with a couple of cocktails chosen from an extensive menu and breakfast was bloody good too!! The staff were all very welcoming and friendly and we can't recommend this hotel highly enough. Perfectly located to explore the local area, it's well worth checking out.
