About This Pub
Ah, Cow & Cask – what a lovely spot it is for anyone who fancies a quality pint without the hustle and bustle of a big chain pub. From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this fantastic array of beers that you don't see everywhere, like that Deer Stalker bitter from Ramsbury Brewery, and it's clear the folks who run it know their stuff. The atmosphere really shines through; reviewers keep mentioning the friendly welcomes and great conversations with the regulars, making it feel like you're popping in for a catch-up with mates. It's got a solid 4.8 rating, with most people giving it five stars, which says a lot about how much it's appreciated. On the flip side, though, the food is pretty basic – think quick snacks rather than a proper nosh-up – and the small size means it might not be ideal if you're after more space or a larger group outing. Plus, with hours that kick off around teatime and only five days a week, you might have to plan around it. All in all, if you're a beer enthusiast looking for a genuine, unpretentious pub experience, I'd say give it a go; it's got that old-school charm, but just keep in mind it won't cater to every need.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely brilliant – they've got a cracking range of ales and ciders, often from local breweries, and the barrels change frequently so there's always something new to try.
-
The atmosphere is spot on; it's a proper cosy micropub where you can have a good old chat with friendly regulars and enjoy that welcoming vibe.
-
Service is top-notch, with staff who make you feel right at home, and it's perfect for a relaxed pint or a summer evening outside.
-
It's got a high rating for a reason – most folks rave about it, calling it a hidden gem in Newbury.
Cons
-
The food options are a bit limited, just sandwiches, snacks, and the odd pickled egg, so it's not the place for a full meal.
-
Being a small micropub, it can feel a tad cramped if it gets busy, and you might not find a seat during peak times.
-
The opening hours are a bit restricted, typically from mid-afternoon till evening and only on five days a week, which might not suit everyone.
-
No website means it's trickier to check what's on offer or the exact schedule before you head over.

Lovely choice of beers and great atmosphere. Will visit again.
I always pop in the Cow and Cask for a beer 🍺 whenI get the chance. Great service and great beer. Food is ok as its only in the form of sandwiches and snacks due to the size of the pub.
Proper chat and conversation with a great bunch of regulars.
Strongly recomend a visite if you like great beer and no TV in the pub.
Ian the owner and barman is so pleasant and welcoming.

Always a friendly welcome at this micropub, with a selection of interesting beers that you don't see around too often. The barrels change frequently so there are always different beers, ciders etc available when you visit.
I enjoyed a pint of Deer Stalker bitter from the Ramsbury Brewery which was great.
Be prepared to share one of the 3 tables with others and enjoy good conversations! There are a few small tables outside too if the weather is decent.
Nice cozy micro pub, there is a nice collection of ales and wines. Outdoor seating is good for summer evening hangouts.
Brilliant little micro bar. Friendly locals. Crisp nuts and pickled egg food list. Old school beer out of the barrel. Perfect.
