About This Pub

Ah, The Coach & Horses in Leyton is one of those neighbourhood spots that just draws you in with its warm, unpretentious charm – it's been a local haunt since 1863, after all. From what I've gathered from folks who've popped in, the beer lineup is a real standout; they've got up to 25 options on tap, from cask ales to hand-pulled ciders, making it an absolute treat for anyone who appreciates a proper pint. Pair that with their authentic Sri Lankan street food, like the spicy Kottu or Lamprais on Sundays, and you've got a menu that's a refreshing change from the usual pub fare – though do keep in mind, as one person mentioned, the roast can sometimes be a tad dry, so it might not be perfect every time. On the upside, the team behind the bar are always in good spirits and quick to make you feel at home, which really elevates the whole experience. Throw in live music sessions on Fridays and plenty of screens for catching the big games, and it's got that lively edge without being overwhelming. It's spot-on for families or if you're bringing the dog along, with a beer garden that's ideal for a chat over drinks, rain or shine. Overall, it's a solid choice for a casual get-together, but I'd say go in with an open mind on the food to avoid any disappointments – it's all about enjoying the vibe and the brews!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer selection is absolutely brilliant, with a vast array of local and continental options that really cater to all tastes.
  • Their authentic Sri Lankan street food is a delightful twist on pub grub and always hits the spot for something a bit different.
  • The staff are incredibly friendly and welcoming, making every visit feel like catching up with old mates.
  • Live music on Fridays and sports screenings on the multiple screens add a lively buzz to the atmosphere.
  • It's wonderfully family and dog-friendly, complete with a partially-covered beer garden that's perfect for enjoying a drink outside, even if the weather's playing up.
Cons
  • Some of the food can be hit or miss, like the Sunday roast where the chicken might turn out a bit dry or overdone.
  • Portions are generous, but occasionally the quality doesn't quite live up to expectations, as shared in a few experiences.

What a great experience. Been there with two kids. Had the Sri Lanka Kottu (spicy and with cheese), which is a bit unusual for a pub but definitely a recommendation! Additionally we had the fish n chips, also very delicious. All the staff were very polite and all in a good mood (always a good sign), also patient with the kids. We enjoyed our visit a lot.

Sunday roast was tasty had the trio, the portions were big, the chicken seems a little dry, the beef was a bit chewy… I am not normally a fan of pork but wow the pork was delicious!!! So I gave the rest of the meat to my dog

We booked a table for Sunday lunch and as first time visitors had no expectations. The staff welcomed us and took us to our table and throughout our visit were polite and attentive. The food was unfortunately a huge let down. We had the whole roast chicken (£50 for 3 people) - it was dry and overdone, as were the Yorkshire puddings. We complained and got nothing but an apology. We thought the desserts might make things up but honestly it was some of the worst food we’ve eaten in a long time. The sticky toffee pudding was cold, the sauce burnt and the vegan ice cream tasted/looked horrid. Similar stories for the crumble and brownie. You get what you pay for and while we enjoyed the lamb curry, the rest was terrible. Might be a decent boozer but stay away from the kitchen.

Been going to The Coach & Horses regularly of late and for good reason, it's a proper Free house pub. The beer selection is vast with many cask and keg options which is carefully cultivated to give many brewery and style of beer to choose. Venue is big with lots of seating and screens for sports very comfortable. People make places and the staff here are a good bunch who are friendly and knowledgeable. Probably the best pub in Leyton.

A great pub for Craft Beer and Real Ale which is a few minutes walk from both Leyton underground station and Leyton Midland Station. I counted 24 Keg taps and 10 cask taps, and when we visited there were 7 different cask beers and 16 different keg beers offering a variety of styles and breweries. They also have a decent range of AF beers in the fridge. We've also had the Sunday roast twice now, and both times was very tasty, especially the rosemary and garlic roast potatoes. It's also worth noting that the Gravity Well brewery tap room is only a few minutes walk away (who are probably producing some of the best hazy IPAs at the moment), so it's worth the trip over to visit both.
