About This Pub

Ah, The Birkbeck Tavern – it's one of those unassuming spots in East London that just draws you in with its charm. I've got to say, the beer garden really steals the show; it's spacious and green, almost like nipping over to your nan's for a relaxed lunch, and it's brilliant for soaking up the sun or enjoying a quiet chat. The staff are an absolute delight, always up for a bit of banter while serving up a decent pint, and they've got a cracking range of beers, wines, and spirits that won't set you back too much, even in pricey London. Plus, with pool, darts, and even quiz nights, it's easy to while away an evening with friends. On the flip side, if you're not drinking, the non-alcoholic choices are a bit slim, and sometimes those sought-after cask ales or a proper Guinness might be off the menu, which is a shame. Still, overall, it's a reliable haunt with a lovely atmosphere, especially if you're near Leyton Orient for a match – just pop in, grab a seat, and enjoy the vibe, but maybe plan ahead for those drink preferences!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The beer garden is an absolute gem – spacious, green, and feels like a cosy escape, perfect for a sunny afternoon or even a spot of people-watching.
  • Friendly staff who serve with a smile and a chat, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • A cracking selection of drinks, including a great range of real ales, lagers, wines, and spirits, with some seasonal specials that keep things fresh and exciting.
  • Loads of fun activities like pool and darts, with free games on Mondays and Thursdays – ideal for a casual night out with mates.
  • The function room is spot on for events, whether it's a birthday bash, wedding do, or even a wake, complete with a private bar and garden area.
  • Reasonably priced for London, so you won't break the bank on a few pints or a round of drinks.
  • It's conveniently located near Leyton Orient and public transport, making it a top choice for pre-match meet-ups or just popping in after work.
Cons
  • Not much choice for non-alcoholic beers, which might leave those opting for a soft option feeling a bit short-changed.
  • Occasionally, some popular drinks like cask ales or Guinness aren't available due to technical hitches, which can be a bit disappointing if that's what you're after.
  • The operating hours seem a tad inconsistent from what I've seen, so it's worth double-checking to avoid turning up when it's closed early.

Cracking pub; pool table, lovely garden, things of room. Could do with a few more non alcoholic beers to choose from, otherwise great

Had pizza delivered from local outlet and ate at the pub. The pub gave me a menu. Great idea. Fab service. Good beer. Lovely staff. My son and I had 4 pints each, pizza, etc and played three games of pool.

One of East London's best beer gardens, spacious and green, feels like you're at your grandma's place for Easter lunch. Service with a smile and a chat, decent selection of drinks and reasonably priced for London. Pour a good Guiness

Decent pub about 7 minutes walk from Leyton underground station and about 18 minutes from Brisbane Road. Two cask beers on handpump when I visited. Lots of outdoor seating some of it covered.

A delightful building housing a lovely pub. The Birkbeck Tavern is an excellent place to drop in for a beer when you find it on the backstreets of Leyton. Lovely atmosphere. Nearly missed out on 5🌟, due to unavailability of cask ales and Guinness however, a technical issue that will be resolved soonest. A great pub for all!
