About This Pub

Ah, The Coach & Horses—it's one of those pubs that really captures the heart of the community in Rickmansworth, with its rich history dating back centuries and that warm, inviting feel that makes you want to settle in for the evening. I love how they've kept the old-school charm alive while offering a solid menu of fresh, seasonal dishes made from local ingredients—think tasty roasts and those brilliant nachos that everyone's raving about. The staff are an absolute treat, always cheerful and quick to help, whether you're just nipping in for a pint of real ale or organising a bigger gathering. And don't forget the beer garden; it's a cracking spot for soaking up the sun with a glass of award-winning wine in hand. On the flip side, it's not all smooth sailing—some folks have had to wait ages for their food, and there've been a few grumbles about things not being cooked quite right, like a steak that ended up well done when medium was asked for, or kids' options that feel a bit underwhelming. Still, they've shown they're willing to make things right, as one reviewer mentioned getting a meal comped after a complaint. Overall, it's a solid choice for a good night out, but I'd say it's best to go in with realistic expectations and maybe avoid peak times if you're in a rush. If you're a fan of traditional pubs with a bit of character, this one's worth a visit—just keep an eye on the service to make sure your experience lives up to the hype.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely charming, with its historic 16th-century vibes that make you feel like you're stepping back in time—perfect for a cosy catch-up with mates.
  • The food is a real highlight; they've got a seasonal menu with fresh, locally sourced dishes that taste spot on, and things like those amazing nachos and roast dinners keep everyone coming back.
  • Staff are incredibly friendly and attentive, always ready to sort things out if there's a snag, which makes for a welcoming experience whether you're popping in for a pint or hosting a family do.
  • The beer garden is a lovely spot for enjoying a real ale or wine in the fresh air, especially on a sunny day, and it's great for groups.
  • Prices are pretty reasonable for the quality, with award-winning wines and ales that won't break the bank.
Cons
  • There can be long waits for food sometimes, like one chap waited over an hour for his steak, which puts a bit of a dampener on things.
  • Food might not always come out as ordered— we've heard of steaks being overcooked and kids' meals being a bit basic, like fish fingers instead of proper fish and chips.
  • It seems like service can be inconsistent, with some visits being spot on and others feeling a tad unreliable, especially during busier times.
  • While it's generally clean and well-decorated, a few folks have mentioned it's not always perfect, which might bother those after a flawless outing.

The staff at The Coach and Horses made us very welcome for a family gathering prior to a wedding. At all times they were friendly, attentive and reliable. They quickly made significant adjustments to the seating arrangements to accommodate our group of 11 in a different area of the premises better suited to our limited mobility. The food was excellent and chef extremely attentive to complex dietary requirements within our party. We ate well, the food was very good and the customer service excellent. We will certainly return when we can all gather again from the different corners of the globe where we live, but people in Australia and Sweden can expect to hear The Coach and Horses recommended for good service and attention to allergens

I’m not normally the kind of person to write a negative review, however I came for Steak Thursday. Placed my order at 12:47. Food was served at 14:15, a steak (ordered medium) which was well done the entire way through had to be returned, the kids ‘Fish & Chips’ is just fish fingers and chips, I suppose the buttermilk chicken burger was decent however only 1/3 people getting what they asked for is unacceptable. I asked the hostess at regular intervals if the food would be much longer, to be told ‘5 minutes’ each time - I don’t think this is acceptable. EDIT: On leaving, and attempting to pay the bill, the hostess informed me that the bill was comp’d due to time waiting and quality - as a result I’ve updated the “Service” rating to 4*.

Lovely old pub with great quirky decor inside. A lovely beer garden out the back and AMAZING nachos!! The roast dinners are fab too but roast potatoes aren’t the best. We made a complaint and the manager was so so helpful and didn’t charge us for one of our meals. Everything else was brilliant and we will definitely return again to sit out in the lovely garden in the sun ☀️

very nice food. All are good taste. nice presentation of food. the shop environment is well decorated and good temperature, clean and happy mood. We reserved table and give us a quite comfy and private area. Staffs comes in often to check with your needs. Price reasonably. kids meals are good, mix and match to your preference. If you would try the single scoop adult ice cream £1.5, please order before 9pm. good for friends gathering and nice food.
