About This Pub
Ah, let me tell you about the Old Shades – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper British institution, tucked away near Trafalgar Square in the bustling heart of Westminster. I had a cracking time there the other day; the staff were so warm and chatty, really making you feel like you're among friends while they dish out helpful tips on what to order. The food? Oh, it's spot on – I went for the Sunday roast and it was an absolute belter, all tender and full of flavour, just like the homemade pies and fish and chips that folks rave about. And don't get me started on the drinks; they've got a brilliant range of ales and seasonal cocktails that pair perfectly with the grub. On the flip side, it's no secret that it gets rammed, especially with tourists milling about, so you might find yourself jostling for space or needing to book in advance to avoid disappointment. Still, for a solid, no-fuss pub experience in London, it's well worth a visit – just go with the flow and you'll have a top-notch time.
Pros and Cons
Pros

The staff are absolutely lovely and welcoming, always ready with spot-on recommendations for food and drinks that make you feel right at home.
-
The food is a real highlight – think hearty British classics like crispy fish and chips, homemade pies, and a cracking Sunday roast that hits the spot every time.
-
It's got that authentic, historic pub charm with its Grade II listed building, creating a cosy atmosphere perfect for a relaxing pint or catch-up.
-
Smack in the heart of Westminster near Trafalgar Square, it's an ideal spot for a quick break from sightseeing or exploring London.
-
They've got a fantastic selection of British ales, beers, wines, and spirits, including seasonal specials like spritzes that add a fun twist to the menu.
Cons
-
It can get pretty busy, especially in the evenings or on weekends, so you might have to plan ahead or risk waiting for a table.
-
Being in a tourist-heavy area, the vibe can sometimes feel a bit crowded and lively, which might not suit those after a quiet escape.
-
With moderate prices in central London, things can add up if you're treating yourself to a full meal and drinks, so it's worth keeping an eye on the bill.

Beks was a fabulous bartender/server! Warm, friendly, gave helpful food and drink recommendations, had great conversation while we had our Sunday roast at the bar (oh my gosh, the chicken was fantastic!!) Cannot recommend more highly!
Just a great looking, traditional historic pub just off the heavy tourist area of Trafalgar Square. It gets quite busy and you probably need a reservation, but it’s worth a visit.
I went on a busy Sunday evening and was able to grab a seat at the bar even with a full house. Great food and drink menu, and again, the place is definitely photo worthy on the inside.
The service is fast, with men who know how to move tourists through. True British “experienced” staff - fast and direct, no nonsense which serves them well given the crowds. The food - I ordered the beef Sunday roast - was good at a reasonable price for the area.
The meat pie was delicious. The best crust we've had here in London. It was actually by mistake that we were served the meat pie but we tried it and we're very happy to have gotten it .
Service was amazing and friendly! Server recommended the perfect beer for my meal.
The food was absolutely perfect. We had the haddock and chips and 11/10!!
We loved the aesthetics. The old time pub with soft music that allows for good conversation. You can’t even hear the street outside either, and it’s on a busy area. This place is great!
Visiting London for the first time and we were looking for a spot to have some drinks and a hearty meal. We stopped into The Old Shades and were welcomed into a beautiful pub. Everyone working is so warm and friendly and don’t even get me started on the food! We started with some bloody Mary’s (highly recommend) before moving into our main lunch course. I had the steak and ale pie and it was INCREDIBLE! The rest of our table ordered the burger and fish and chips and honestly you can’t go wrong here. Definitely would recommend if you’re visiting London or in the area! Huge shout to Roger and Diana for being wonderful hosts to us!
