About This Pub

Ah, the Horse & Guardsman – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper slice of London life, tucked away between Trafalgar Square and Westminster. I'd say it's got that timeless appeal with its Victorian-style decor, high ceilings, and plenty of space to settle in for a chat over a pint. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, folks are raving about the food; the Sunday roasts and bangers and mash come highly recommended, and they're dished up with real care, leaving you feeling satisfied without breaking the bank too much. The service stands out too – it's friendly and efficient, which makes all the difference when you're trying to enjoy a meal or a drink in such a lively spot. On the flip side, it does get packed, especially with tourists milling about, so you might find yourself jostling for a table or dealing with a bit of a wait. And while the traditional vibe is charming, if you're after something more modern or diverse on the menu, it might not quite hit the mark. All in all, it's a solid choice for a quintessentially British pub experience – I'd pop in for a visit if you're in the area, but keep in mind it shines brightest when you're in the mood for classics rather than surprises.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely spot on – it's got that classic, wood-panelled charm with high ceilings and a relaxed vibe, perfect for unwinding after a day of sightseeing in London.
  • The food is a real highlight; think delicious traditional dishes like bangers and mash or a cracking Sunday roast, all made with fresh ingredients and served up just right.
  • Service is top-notch – the staff are attentive and friendly, making you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a pint or booking a private space.
  • It's dog-friendly, which is brilliant if you're out and about with your furry mate, and the location near Trafalgar Square is spot on for a quick escape from the hustle.
  • With a solid beer selection and some creative cocktails, there's something for everyone, and it's moderately priced for such a prime spot in the city.
Cons
  • It can get pretty busy, especially in the evenings or on weekends, so you might have to queue or struggle to find a seat during peak times.
  • The menu sticks mostly to traditional pub fare, which is great if that's what you're after, but it might not offer much variety for those wanting something a bit more adventurous.
  • Being in a touristy area, prices are on the higher side compared to your average local boozer, so it could feel a tad pricey for a casual night out.

Great traditional pub even while being so close to the tourist hotspot that is Trafalgar Square. Really great vibe inside with a large open, beautiful bar area as you come in with more dubbing being it and upstairs on the second floor. Great feel, really comfortable. The service was good as you order from the bar but the food comes quickly and the staff are attentive. Had to try the fish and chips with a combo of mushy and whole pees, which was all very good. They have several of their own beers on tap along with a nice line up of traditional pub ales.

We stopped here for a rather late dinner around 8:30pm. It's a solid pub, with plenty of seating on the main floor and the floor above as well. I ordered bangers & mash, which was delicious and really filling. My sister got the prawn pasta, which was garlicky and also really tasty. We shared a raspberry tartlet which was amazing; the freeze-dried raspberry garnish added along with the ice cream on top paired really well with the tartlet. This is a great pub near Trafalgar Square. Would highly recommend!

The Horse & Guardsman pub is a fantastic spot to enjoy a Sunday roast. We stumbled upon it by chance, and it turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The food was excellent, and the beer selection was equally impressive. The pub’s decor is dedicated to celebrating the Foot Guards and Mounted Guards, creating a unique and inviting atmosphere. We were able to walk right in and get a table with no trouble, but it’s still advisable to make reservations, especially on busier days. Our waitress was knowledgeable and provided great recommendations for beers that would pair well with the Sunday roast. A wonderful experience overall!

This is a must-go English traditional pub just few steps from the Trafalgar Square. We went here for Sunday Roast tradition for the Sunday roast and some pints. The atmostphere inside the pub is terrific. The dishes were pretty good! We highly recommend the beef and half chicken roast. The staff were also very friendly and interactive. Will return in the future! Tips: the toilet's aesthetic is out of this world!
