About This Pub

Ah, The Chestnut Tree – it's one of those places in Derby that just hits the spot if you're in the mood for something a bit different from the usual pub fare. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the Indian dishes are truly something special; think mouth-watering curries, fresh naan, and flavours that feel straight out of India, all whipped up by a talented chef. It's dead affordable too, so you won't feel like you've splashed out, and the staff are proper friendly, making you feel welcome from the moment you walk in – no need to book ahead, which is a bonus for spontaneous plans. The space is nice and roomy, with a good car park, and it sounds like they've got extras like pool tables and a DJ on occasion, adding to the fun. On the downside, if Indian isn't your thing or you're craving classic British pub food, it might not quite satisfy that itch, and the website's a tad underwhelming, just giving basic contact info rather than a full menu or events list. Still, with an overall rating hovering around excellent, it's clear this spot does a lot right for anyone after a relaxed meal and a pint – I'd say it's worth a try if you're in the area!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The Indian cuisine is absolutely spot-on, with fantastic flavours and fresh naan that just melts in your mouth – it's a real highlight for food lovers.
  • The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, with friendly staff and an owner who makes you feel right at home, perfect for a casual get-together.
  • It's incredibly affordable for the quality you get, so you can enjoy authentic dishes without breaking the bank.
  • Spacious inside with a big, safe car park, making it easy to pop in with friends or family for a meal and maybe even a game of pool or some tunes from the DJ.
Cons
  • It leans heavily towards Indian food, so if you're after traditional pub grub like a hearty pie or fish and chips, you might find the menu a bit one-sided.
  • The website is quite basic and just covers contact details, which could make it tricky to get a full sense of what's on offer before you visit.
  • With standard hours from midday to 11pm, it might not suit late-night outings, though that's common for many spots like this.

"I've been going there since it opened, and I’ve never been disappointed. The desi food, cooked by their special chef from India, is always top-notch. It’s great to visit without needing a reservation, and the owner always makes you feel welcome. You don’t need to pay sky-high prices to get authentic, affordable Indian food from Punjab. Highly recommended!"

Heard great things about the curries here, and being a curry lover I though I would come and check it out. I was very impressed, created by a lovely chap behind the bar, and the food was delicious. One of the best curries I’ve had in a long time, I had chicken madras and the wife had tikka paneer butter masala. I can highly recommend this place. Will deffo be back

The car park is big and safe. On arrival we were greeted and seated and given menus. We ordered a mixed grill and two house special curry’s, the food really was authentic, tasty and probably the best mixed grill in Derby. The nans were very tasty too. The Carling was fresh and nice. Large spacious interior with good customer service. Will be returning soon,
