About This Pub
Oh, The Chequers in Oxford is one of those places that just warms your cockles, isn't it? Tucked away on the High Street, it's got this fabulous history stretching back to the 1500s, with a cosy interior full of character and a brilliant courtyard that's ideal for soaking up the sun with a cold pint. The team there are absolute stars, always on hand with a smile and that genuine hospitality that makes you want to linger. You'll find a smashing selection of beers and cocktails, paired with hearty British classics like pies and sandwiches that are spot on for a satisfying meal. It's no wonder folks rave about it – the recent reviews are full of praise for the atmosphere and grub. But, to keep it real, it does get heaving at times, which might mean a queue or slower service on peak evenings, and the prices, while moderate, can add up if you're not watching the tab. All in all, it's a top spot for a proper pub experience, and I'd say it's well worth popping in if you're exploring Oxford – just go with the flow and you'll have a lovely time!
Pros and Cons

-
The food is proper British pub grub – think unbeatable pies, tasty sandwiches, and dishes like bangers and mash that hit the spot
-

Cons
-
It can get pretty busy, especially in the city centre, so you might end up waiting for a table or a spot outside
-
With moderate prices, it might feel a bit pricey if you're out for a long evening or with a larger group, though it's fair for what you get
-
While recent feedback has been glowing, the overall rating suggests there could be occasional inconsistencies, like on busier nights when service might not be as snappy

An Absolute Gem in the Heart of Oxford!
I can’t say enough wonderful things about The Chequers. From the moment we stepped inside, we were warmly welcomed by the incredibly friendly and attentive staff—nothing was too much trouble, and their genuine hospitality made us feel right at home.
The food? Absolutely sensational. Every dish was cooked to perfection, bursting with flavour, and beautifully presented. It’s clear that real care and passion go into the kitchen here. Whether you’re popping in for a casual bite or a more indulgent meal, you’re in for a treat.
And let’s not forget the venue itself—tucked away down a charming Oxford alley, The Chequers is both historic and stylish. With its cozy, character-filled interiors and atmospheric courtyard, it’s the perfect blend of traditional and contemporary. A real feast for the senses.
This place has everything: warm service, outstanding food, and a truly beautiful setting. I can’t wait to return—The Chequers is now firmly at the top of my list for Oxford pubs!
Interesting pub indeed! From a small alleyway, you get to a great courtyard with loads of seating. The pub itself is amazing inside, great beers! and they serve good food. The staff are friendly and attentive too! Well worth a visit!
We enjoyed visiting The Chequers! It’s a fun layout, with seating all over the place. They have really managed to expand as best they could. We ordered the Camembert and a bottle of wine and it was fantastic. The rest of the food menu looked amazing. Definitely worth adding to your pub crawl list!
Loved their patio setting and their food menu. Staff was welcoming. Delicious sirloin stake sandwich and good beer and cocktail selection.
Me and my friend dropped in during our day trip to Oxford. Very nice place with great atmosphere and a fine choice of both draught and bottled beer. I had bangers and mash as well as loaded fries and the food was very good. Can surely recommend.
