About This Pub
Ah, The Chequers – it's one of those classic pubs that you stumble upon and think, 'This is just what I needed after a long week.' From what I've gathered chatting about it with mates, the real highlights are the friendly staff who bend over backwards to sort you out, even if you pop in unannounced. That outside seating and garden area are spot on for a relaxed afternoon pint or a family get-together, and when the food's flowing, like their Sunday roasts or fun themed nights, it's tasty and won't break the bank. But let's be straight, it's not all roses – some folks have mentioned the portions can be a tad disappointing, with meat that's more whisper than substance, and the desserts might feel a bit steep. Plus, if you're counting on a full meal, you might find they've got other events on and aren't serving, which is a shame if you've built up an appetite. Overall, with a strong 4.4 rating, it's a solid choice for a pint and a chat, but I'd say give it a go knowing it's got that homely charm with a few quirks – just pop in with realistic expectations and you're in for a good time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The staff are absolutely brilliant and go out of their way to make you feel welcome, which really adds to the cosy vibe of this traditional country pub.
-
It's a well-kept spot with lovely outside seating and a nice garden area, perfect for enjoying a drink on a sunny day or bringing the dog along.
-
The food can be a real treat when it's on offer, like their Sunday roasts or themed nights, and it's reasonably priced for what you get.
-
With a solid 4.4 rating, it's clear that folks appreciate the friendly atmosphere and the fact it's open every day from midday till midnight.
Cons
-
Some meals, like the Sunday lunch, can feel a bit skimpy on portions – think thin slices of meat that might leave you wanting more for the price.
-
Puddings and extras can come across as pricey, which might put a dampener on things if you're hoping for a full meal out.
-
Food isn't always available, as they might be tied up with events like funerals, so it's worth checking ahead if that's what you're after.
-
A few visits seem to end up being just about drinks because of these hitches, which could disappoint if you're in the mood for a proper pub grub session.

Had a lovely meal at The Chequers with the family, the staff went out of their way to accommodate us even though we walked in. The pub is a small well kept county pub, with outside seating and a nice restaurant area inside. We had the lamb Sunday roast, it was very reasonably priced and delicious to boot. It was served with a large jug of gravy unlike many places we visit. The child's roast was also well cooked and well thought out. The food was clearly cooked with love and care. Over all it was a great experience and I would recommend The Chequers. Thanks for a lovely experience.
For the cost of a Sunday lunch it's worth the money, but don't expect much the meat selection four slices of paper thin beef, lamb, and what resembled a nugget size piece of chicken. The puddings where also
rather expensive.
Popped in here with a friend for lunch but sadly they were not serving food that day as they were catering for a funeral.
We just sat in the garden with our drinks and the dogs. The garden is nice with tables nicely spaced. There is also a small car park.
We only stayed for the one drink as we were getting hungry. Would go back if they were serving food.
Arrived here after trying to revisit my youth and take my wife back to a pub I used to frequent
Only to find out it's now a country store!.. more info another time.
However stopped here to grab a drink and ended up staying for a couple.
On our arrival the landlord was on the phone and carried on the conversation politely whilst taking our orders.
However after seating ourselves in the garden with our drinks he came over to us directly and immediately apologised for any slight caused.
He had been on the phone to his Regional Manager discussing renovations and we had arrived at a particularly crucial part.
Firstly I had taken no affront to him carrying on a telephone conversation sporadically whilst serving me but secondly and more importantly to immediately apologise showed such a concern for customers that we will be back.
Plus the Ale and lager available are great.
Also there is a chicken run and coup in the garden and a barrel of water for patron's dogs.
Lovely village setting with the church just across the road and really great guy.
Tonight was Mexican night. Starters we had mini beef tacos main fajitas and beef brisket. Pudding was home made rum cheese and churros with chocolate dipping sauce. The special drinks on offer tonight were mojito and margaritas!
James and Katie are amazing landlords and the staff are a great credit to them.
