About This Pub
Ah, The Central in Gateshead – what a gem it is for us pub lovers! I've got to say, stepping into this place feels like a warm hug from the past; it's got that iconic coffin-shaped building that's just full of character, and the multiple floors make it so versatile – whether you're up for a game of pool on the first floor, catching a live gig in the event room, or enjoying a quiet drink on the balcony terrace. The beer selection is top-notch, with plenty of interesting ales and ciders that keep things exciting, and they're always hosting fun events like music nights and quizzes, which really add to the buzz. On the flip side, though, the food menu is pretty basic, just some simple bar snacks, so if you're peckish for something more substantial, you might find yourself a bit disappointed. And while its straightforward, old-school charm is endearing, it does feel a tad dated compared to some of the flashier craft spots nearby, which could put off those after a more contemporary vibe. All in all, it's a solid choice for a relaxed pint and a laugh with mates, especially if you're exploring the area – just go in with the right expectations, and you'll have a brilliant time.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The beer selection is absolutely brilliant, with a wide range of ales, ciders, and spirits that really hit the spot for any ale enthusiast.
-
It's got such a charming, historic vibe with its iconic coffin-shaped building, offering multiple floors including a cosy ground floor bar, a first floor with a pool table and live gig room, and a top-floor balcony terrace that's perfect for a relaxing pint.
-
They're always buzzing with events like live music, quizzes, and special gigs, making it a lively spot for a night out or a casual catch-up.
-
The atmosphere is welcoming and feels like a proper traditional pub, ideal for a pre-game stop or just soaking in the local character.
Cons
-
The food options are a bit limited, just some basic bar snacks, so if you're after a proper meal, you might need to head elsewhere.
-
It can come across as a tad basic or spartan inside, harking back to older times, which might not appeal if you prefer something more modern or polished.
-
The operating hours seem a touch inconsistent from what I've seen, so it's worth checking in advance to avoid any surprises.

A three floor pub. Wide range of ale, spirits and wine. Limited bar snack menu. Bar on the ground floor. First floor has a pool table and a gig room for live events. Second floor has a balcony terrace and a private function room for hire.
Nice pint before game. Fantastic looking pub inside and out and great range of beer.
Been to this pub a couple of times love it. Good range of ales and ciders on, food menu looks good not tried yet.
Lovely place nice stop off walking to quayside.
This really is a beautiful building.
Good variety of Ales and also do food we will try next time
You definitely want to include The Central in your crawl if venturing over the river. It makes a nice contrast to the quirky craft beer joints nearby. The Central is not quirky but does offer plenty of interesting beers on tap. It’s relatively spartan, relatively basic and harks back to a bygone era. As dependable as an old Geordie gent.
