About This Pub

Oh, let me tell you about The Camel – it's one of those unassuming East London gems that you stumble upon and end up loving. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the pies are just spot on; they're hearty, flavoursome, and they've got choices for everyone, whether you're after something meaty or plant-based. The atmosphere is dead cosy, ideal for a laid-back pint or a chat with friends, and the staff really go the extra mile to make you feel welcome. It's open every day from midday till 11 PM, which is handy for a spontaneous stop, but being a bit off the main drag means it might not be the easiest to find if you're new to Bethnal Green. Still, with such glowing feedback from regulars, it's clear this place does a lot right – the drinks selection is spot on too, with cask ales that hit the spot. All in all, it's got that family-run charm that makes it stand out, though I do wish there was more online info to help plan a visit. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth popping in for a proper good time.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The pies are an absolute delight – they're the star of the show and come highly recommended, with options for vegans and vegetarians too.
  • It's a snug and cosy spot, perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates, especially on a quieter afternoon.
  • The staff are wonderfully friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home from the moment you walk in.
  • They've got a great selection of drinks, like those tasty cask ales, and it's all at a moderate price that's easy on the wallet.
  • Outdoor seating in the alleyway is a nice touch for when the weather's playing ball, adding a bit of variety to your visit.
Cons
  • It's a bit tucked away and hidden, so you might have to hunt for it a little, which could be a faff if you're not familiar with the area.
  • No website means it's trickier to check out the menu or details online before you go, which is a shame in this digital age.

A proper hidden gem in Bethnal Green! I first discovered The Camel through my boyfriend, as it was his favourite spot, and it quickly became mine too. Even before I moved to the area, we’d make the trip just for the pies (which are absolutely fantastic). Since moving here five years ago, it’s been my go-to local, and it never disappoints. What truly makes The Camel special is Debbie, she always checks in to make sure everything is just right. The staff are always lovely, and over time you start to recognise the regulars, which just adds to the charm. The atmosphere here is cosy, friendly, and full of character. Whether you’re popping in for a quick pint or settling in for the evening, it’s always a great experience.

I found this pub on Google maps. I fancied a pub lunch so looked on maps to see what was in the area. The reviews were really good and I'd walked past recently and thought it looked like a cute pub. I went on a Friday lunch time at 12, so it wasn't too busy. The staff were really friendly. I had the Moo Blue (steak, ale and blue cheese) pie. It was delicious and not too badly priced at £11.95.

Another great, family-run, East London pub. Again, Friday lunchtime on the last day of (dry) January, so relatively quiet. Three cask ales on - my pint of Wandle (£4.60) was gorgeous. The pies & mash looked great - must try next time. Alleyway outdoor seating for when the weather finally improves! Pubs like these are little gems that need supporting.
