About This Pub

Ah, The Burns Hotel – it's one of those classic York pubs that really takes you back in time with its quirky, cosy setup. I have to say, if you're after a place where you can just sit back, enjoy a decent pint of Sam Smith's bitter or their raspberry fruit beer without the distraction of phones everywhere, you'll probably love it. The prices are spot on too; it's refreshing to find somewhere affordable these days. On the flip side, though, the drink selection is quite narrow – think mostly Sam Smith's options and not much else, so if you're fancying a gin and tonic or a nice glass of wine, you might end up disappointed. And let's be honest, that no-phone policy, while well-intentioned for keeping things sociable, can come across as a bit stern with staff jumping in quickly, which has left a few people feeling a tad unwelcome. Overall, it's a solid choice if you're in the mood for a traditional, chatty evening, but it might not be everyone's cup of tea if you prefer a more relaxed, flexible vibe.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • It's a cosy, traditional spot with plenty of character, perfect for a relaxed chat over a pint.
  • Prices are really reasonable, making it a great choice if you're watching your wallet.
  • They've got a solid selection of Sam Smith's brews, like the old brewery bitter and imperial stout, which are absolute gems if you're a fan.
Cons
  • The drink options are pretty limited – mostly just Sam Smith's beers, with no gin or much choice in wine, which might disappoint if you're after variety.
  • The strict no-phone rule can feel a bit heavy-handed, with staff sometimes coming across as rude when enforcing it.
  • The atmosphere might not be for everyone, as some folks have mentioned feeling intimidated by the locals or finding the place a tad unwelcoming.

Not a good choice of drinks unless you want Sam Smiths Beer… No Gin or choice of mixers, no choice of red or white wine..!! We were tourists so used our phone to find directions and were very rudely shown a notice by the bar staff who told us to put our phone away.. would not recommend there are much better friendlier pubs..

The Burns Hotel is a traditional sam smiths pub. A nice cosy pub with all the usual sam smiths drinks, including the old brewery bitter on hand pumps. The imperial stout, the raspberry fruit beer, and organic larger deserve a special mention. The prices are very cheap. There are no bar games but the pub sells good food. The staff are very friendly and welcoming unless they catch you on your phone. A good pub, highly recommended. Not dog or child friendly.

An absolute dump. Draconian pathetic rules. The rude obnoxious sour faced bar maid moaning about my wife checking her phone. Local alcoholics staring at you when you walk in trying to intimidate people. That didn't work because when I looked back they all turned around, so they just looked over occasionally at my 18 year old daughter obviously they think women shouldn't be in a bar. Beer is vile. Visited York for the Christmas market and only popped in here for a quick drink as a tourist. I definitely should have gone somewhere else. Finished the awful beer and left. Definitely won't be back. Hopefully this place closes and the local alcoholics can return to park benches. If you're a tourist stay well away from this dump. Definitely doesn't reflect the decent polite locals.

Called into this place to decide our next move. Nice glass of wine and beer for my partner. Got google maps out to look how far next destination, we'd discussed to go to next. Next thing I'm been told off like a child at school. Clearly the bar lady, who was working the bar alone and was very busy, felt her ego needed to come out. I also work behind a bar and wouldn't dream of dressing down a person in public like that, smile and courtesy is key to a great member of staff. I certainly won't be stepping back into this pub again.
