About This Pub
Ah, The Market Cat – it's one of those pubs that really hits the spot if you're a fan of good beer and a bit of atmosphere. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the place does a stellar job with their craft beers; there's this incredible selection from Thornbridge Brewery, with new ones rotating in regularly, so it's always a fun surprise what you might try next. Pair that with some delicious Milanese-style pizzas that folks rave about for their fresh dough and flavours, and you've got a solid spot for a meal and a drink. The venue itself is charming, spread over three floors with cosy seating downstairs and brilliant views from the top, making it feel like a proper escape in the city centre. But, to keep it real, not everything's perfect – a few people mentioned the pizzas can be a bit greasy or not quite to their taste, and the prices do add up, especially if you're indulging in those premium beers. Still, with such high ratings and positive vibes from recent visitors, it's clear this place knows how to make you feel welcome and keep you coming back for more. If you're in York and fancy a pint with a view, I'd say give it a go – it's got that warm, community feel that makes for a great night out.
Pros and Cons
Pros
-
The selection of craft beers is absolutely brilliant, with a fantastic range on tap and some real gems from Thornbridge Brewery that keep things fresh and exciting.
-
The pizzas are a real treat – they're made fresh with top-notch ingredients, and while they're not for everyone, they're packed with flavour and come in great sizes.
-
It's got such a welcoming atmosphere, with cosy nooks, leather sofas, and stunning views from the upper floors overlooking the market and York Minster – perfect for a relaxed catch-up.
-
The staff are really friendly and knowledgeable, making you feel right at home, whether you're popping in for a quick pint or settling in for the evening.
-
Being in the heart of York city centre, it's ideally placed for a post-explore drink, and they've got a nice mix of traditional pub vibes with a modern edge.
Cons
-
Some of the pizzas can be a bit oily or runny in the middle, which might not suit everyone, though others love that style.
-
Prices are on the steeper side, especially for the beers and drinks, so it might feel a tad pricey if you're watching your wallet.
-
The food menu isn't the most extensive, so if you're after a wide variety of options beyond pizzas and snacks, you might find it a bit limited.

The Market Cat is a modern pub with a contemporary feel. There is an excellent selection of draught drinks, including six hand pulled cask conditioned real ales and a good selection of craft beers. The bar is nice and cosy with booths and seating overlooking the market. There is also seating upstairs giving great views over the city. I haven't tried the food, but the pizzas look amazing. I will definitely be back to try them. The staff are very welcoming and the pub is dog friendly. Featured in the camera good Beer Guide a visit is highly recommended.
If you are adventurous with your beer tasting then Market Cat is defiantly one for the roster. There is an incredible selection with new beers on rotation quite frequently. Although the prices are expensive for some they are very tasty beers.
Despite the menu not being very broad, this pizza's here are incredible. They are good value for money with the larger size pizza is definitely to share.
Nice place for a drink, nice view from the second floor over the market and a good range of beers and largers
Not too unreasonably priced and the drinks were great. Pizza was a little oily and runny in the centre for us, but we know that some people prefer that - still very very tasty though, and the pizza guy is very friendly!!! would definitely recommend to everyone :))
The pizza was absolutely delicious—light, fresh, and full of flavor. Perfectly cooked with quality ingredients. The atmosphere was really nice too—relaxed, welcoming, and a great place to unwind. Definitely a spot I’d come back to!
