About This Pub

Ah, The Boot and Shoe – it's one of those pubs that really hits the spot for a laid-back evening or a Sunday lunch with friends. From what I've gathered, the vibe is just lovely; it's family-oriented with a great atmosphere, whether you're chilling in the spacious beer garden with a refreshing pint or tucking into their fresh, seasonal menu. The pizzas and pub classics, like those hearty Sunday roasts, get plenty of praise for being tasty and good value – that deal for two mains is a bargain for a midweek treat. And let's not forget the solid range of beers from JW Lees; it's a proper nod to traditional British brews with some crafty twists. On the flip side, though, it's not all smooth sailing – a few people have mentioned needing to book tables for food in advance, which can be frustrating if you're in the mood for an impromptu meal and find the place isn't as flexible. Service has been a mixed bag too, with some shifts feeling a bit slow or not as welcoming, and occasionally the grub doesn't quite live up to the hype, like pizzas that are more filling than flavoursome. Overall, it's a solid choice for us pub goers looking for a reliable spot in Lancaster, as long as you plan ahead and keep expectations realistic – I'd say it's worth a visit for the positives alone!

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely spot on – it's family-friendly and perfect for a relaxed catch-up with mates over a pint.
  • Their woodfired pizzas and seasonal pub grub are a real treat, especially the Sunday roasts with bottomless Yorkshire puds and gravy – I've heard they're some of the best around.
  • The beer garden is a gem for enjoying a cold pint on a sunny day, making it ideal for outdoor vibes without the hustle.
  • Prices are pretty reasonable, like that pub lunch deal for two mains at £21.95, which is great for midweek meet-ups.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of JW Lees beers and other craft options, plus spirits and wines to suit all tastes.
Cons
  • You have to book in advance for food, which can be a bit of a letdown if you're popping in spontaneously and fancy a bite.
  • Service can be hit or miss – some reviews mention it taking ages to get served, which puts a dampener on things.
  • A few folks have had run-ins with less than friendly staff, making the experience feel a tad frosty at times.
  • The food isn't always a winner; a couple of people found it a bit underwhelming, like the pizzas that were filling but lacked that extra spark.

Absolutely lovely place, incredible outside garden, not too loud and amazing atmosphere. Really looking forward to it. Bought drinks, sat outside and then tried to order food.... Only you need to "pre-book table in advance for food." Why??? Loads of tables available, only 5pm. Extremely disappointed. No signs up about this, extremely disappointed.

Great place for Sunday lunch whilst the weather is wet and dreary outside. For the price paid, the plate is well filled and you will be stuffed at the end (Gammon in the photo but also had Roast of the Day (Turkey) and that was the same). Managed to get a table without booking, but to avoid disappointment I would book ahead. EV charging is available in the car park (hidden at the end of the first row, on the left when entering car park) but was unavailable on the Fuuse app.

The food is nice and the bar is also nice. The food appears to have been cooked to order and was fresh and tasty. It took too long to get served though which was a shame really. I've never eaten here before and the waitress was excellent and works so hard. Glad we went. It's just down the road from my son's uni at Lancaster. Good location.

This pub was a nice pit stop. We weren’t thrilled with one of the staff members after receiving a frosty reception but the other staff members seemed nice. We had the pizza here, one spicy chicken and one meat feast. They were very filling but I personally found it a bit lacklustre. The atmosphere and decor was very nice and gave a good ambiance.
