About This Pub

Ah, The Blue Boar – it's one of those cosy pubs in Oulton that really hits the mark for a good night out or a family lunch. From what I've gathered from the buzz around it, the food is where they shine brightest; think delicious, freshly made options like pizzas and fish dishes that cater to all tastes, and at prices that won't break the bank, especially with those mains under £10. It's got that welcoming feel, perfect for kicking back after a long day or enjoying a Sunday roast with the gang. The staff are usually spot on, being polite and efficient, which makes for a pleasant visit. But, let's be honest, it's not all roses – there are times when service slips a bit, like when things get forgotten or a dish doesn't quite come out as expected, such as something arriving cold. Still, with an overall rating hovering around excellent, I'd say it's worth a go if you're in Lowestoft; just keep expectations realistic for a traditional pub setting, and you'll likely have a cracking time sharing a few laughs over a meal.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The food is absolutely spot on – home-made dishes like pizzas, lasagne, fish options, and Sunday roasts that change with the seasons, offering something for everyone, including veggies and vegans.
  • Prices are really reasonable for the quality; you can get mains under £10, making it a brilliant spot for a wallet-friendly meal without skimping on taste.
  • The staff are generally lovely and professional, with quick service even for larger groups, and they've got that warm, welcoming vibe that makes you feel right at home.
  • It's a relaxed, family-friendly place that's open seven days a week, perfect for a casual lunch, evening unwind, or treating the family to a proper meal.
Cons
  • Service can be a bit inconsistent at times, with some folks mentioning hiccups like having to chase for things or not getting everything quite right.
  • There have been a few grumbles about food not being perfect, such as dishes arriving cold or pastry that's a tad soggy, which might put a damper on things.
  • It's not always the smoothest experience if you're after super-attentive service, as it can feel a little laid-back in a way that doesn't suit everyone.

We with a party of eleven people, ages ranging from 7 to 76. Wide range of choices on the menu, even for vegan and vegetarian. We didn’t order ahead of time, but still received our meals within half an hour, which I thought was very good. Food was very good, service good as well. Would highly recommend a visit.

Great food, that good we went 2 nights in a row!! It is also reasonably priced for the quality of the food we had. The 2 people that served us were both extremely polite, friendly and professional (young lady first night and young man the next night) The lady who answered the phone was also very friendly and bubbly and made us feel really welcome We will definitely be back!!

Our First visit to the restaurant and we were very pleased. There is a good range in the menu's so this catered for all our needs. Have to say the prices are so very good fish and chip's steak and chips are very competitive prices. My steak was excellent cooked just how I like it with chunky chip's just enough for me to enjoy my meal without to full as I had a 3 course meal. Everyone in our party enjoyed their meals

First time coming to this place after hearing good things about it, I must admit the food was very very nice I would say faultless, very reasonably priced for a home cooked meal. However.. the service was not the best, It was not overly busy, there was a few hiccups aswell as having to ask for the bill 3 times as they kept getting side tracked. I would still come back and I would still recommend it to other people though 😃 just some improvements needed and possibly some additional training.

A first visit and unfortunately not a good one, I had the Katsu chicken a bit too hot for me buts that's my taste, my husband had the steak and kidney pudding, the pastry was a little soggy and only 1 piece of kidney, my son had the chicken tika Masarla chicken unfortunately it was cold so sent it back there was only 2 pieces of chicken and the the onion baji was raw in the middle, but I must say the Sunday lunch did look good, friendly staff, would I visit again I'm sorry to say no
