About This Pub

Ah, The Blackbird – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a proper local gem in Oxford, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this fantastic community spirit where the staff are always up for a chat and make you feel right at home, even on a packed afternoon during a big match. I love how it's got all the classics sorted, like great beer, Sky Sports on the telly, and activities such as darts and pool to keep things lively, plus it's surprisingly family-friendly with outdoor areas and decent parking. That said, it's not without its quirks; being cash only adds to the charm for some, but it could be a pain if you're not prepared, and without a website, it's a bit of a mystery to plan around. Prices are reasonable, but if you're watching the pennies, you might notice they're not the cheapest around. Overall, it's a solid spot for a good time, and I'd say it's worth popping in if you're in the area – just go with the flow and enjoy the authentic feel, but maybe have some cash ready and check it's not too heaving before you go.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly and bubbly, even when the place is buzzing with activity.
  • It's got a proper welcoming atmosphere, perfect for sinking a few pints and catching the footy on the telly.
  • Loads of fun things to do, like darts and pool, plus it's family-friendly with outdoor spots for a smoke or a drink.
  • Plenty of parking and it's cash only, which gives it that authentic, old-school pub feel that some folks really love.
  • The beer is spot on, and the overall vibe makes it feel like a true local haunt where everyone is made to feel at home.
Cons
  • Being cash only can be a bit of a faff if you're used to tapping your card or don't have notes to hand.
  • No website means it's tricky to check the latest updates or menus online before heading out.
  • It can get quite busy, especially during matches, so you might end up standing or waiting for a spot.
  • While it's inexpensive, some might wish for even lower prices on drinks, as one regular mentioned.
  • Not much info on food options, so if you're after a proper meal, you might need to look elsewhere.

Visited for the Oxford v Watford match later in the afternoon, enjoy a few pints and watch early kick off game on the tv. All staff very friendly and bubbly even when very busy.Advised myself and friend to keep hold of our glass pint as they would be using plastic ones soon! Home fans only signs up but we blended in as locals even though we were there as away fans.£9.35 for 2 pints fosters/carling plenty of others on offer.

Proper locals pub, friendly and welcoming. Visited twice and it just gets better. Yorkie is a great Captain and steers the ship well with a fair hand. Drop in it's proper 👌

!!!W0W!! What a place. One of the best pubs i’ve ever been to. Would highly recommend to anyone visiting England for first time. It has a true historical authentic feel to it with it being cash only. The service is always brilliant and I must say the bartender is the blue dress is absolutely amazing at pouring pints. Best head i’ve had in years. 10/10.

I'm no George Orwell, and this is not his Moon Under The Water, but it is my idea of a perfect pub. All I want from a pub is friendly service, good beer, great atmosphere, and at least one barmaid you can fall in love with, at first sight. I'd prefer lower prices, but realise that I'm a long way from home, and this must be the going rate, round these parts, otherwise why would so many people visit. Left here wishing I didn't have to drive... Wishing I lived nearer... And wishing I was a similar age to the beautiful lady in the red outfit, on Good Friday! Can't wait to visit again.
