About This Pub

Ah, The Bird In The Hand – it's one of those pubs that just feels like a breath of fresh air, you know? From what I've gathered from the reviews, it's got this lovely, welcoming atmosphere that makes you feel right at home the moment you walk in, with folks chatting away and a real sense of community. The service stands out too; the staff are proper friendly, like that story where they helped out someone who turned up early on a hot day – that's the kind of gesture that sticks with you. And the drinks? Well, they've got some great ales and lagers at prices that won't break the bank, though it is worth noting that some might be a bit lighter or cost more for the stronger stuff. On the flip side, the opening hours can be a bit of a nuisance if you're keen for a midday pint, as it doesn't kick off until the afternoon on certain days. Plus, without a website, it's not the easiest to get the lowdown online, so you might end up winging it a bit. All in all, if you're after a relaxed spot for a chat and a drink with mates, it's a winner, but just plan ahead to make the most of it. I'd say it's got that 4.5-star magic for a reason – a solid choice for a traditional night out.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The atmosphere is absolutely welcoming and cosy, making it feel like a proper local haunt where everyone gets along.
  • Service is spot on – friendly and attentive staff who go the extra mile, as one chap mentioned getting a drink even when they arrived early.
  • They've got a great selection of ales and lagers, with some cracking deals like pints for just over two quid, perfect for a budget-friendly night out.
  • It's a traditional pub with a real community vibe, where you can meet new friends and enjoy a good mix of ages and folks from the area.
  • Overall, it's got that classic inn charm that's hard to beat, with positive vibes all round from the reviews.
Cons
  • Opening hours are a tad restrictive, like not starting until 3 PM on some days, which might leave you hanging if you're out and about earlier.
  • Some drinks are on the weaker side or a bit pricier for certain options, so it might not hit the spot if you're after something stronger.
  • There's no website or online info easily available, which could make it tricky to plan a visit or check what's on offer beforehand.

Called in after finishing a leg of the GM Ringway walk on a very hot day about 13.00 on a Friday afternoon. Sadly, I was too early for the pub as it doesn’t open until 15.00 on Fridays so didn’t have a chance to sample the ales. However, the landlady who was outside took pity on me & gave me a thirst quenching soft drink from her own fridge for nowt. Brilliant northern hospitality. If you’re doing the Ringway walks make sure you time it better than me and call in for a pint or several when they’re open

Our favourite local pub. Great ale, great company and an all round great traditional inn. A good mix of age groups who all get along, its certainly not the pub is was years ago, when it was fondly know as "Gods waiting room". Everybody is made welcome regardless if you're from the village or visiting. Dave and Lynne have put a lot of effort in over the last few years with regular games nights, raffles and creating a great pub with a great atmosphere
