About This Pub

Ah, The Beehive, it's one of those pubs that just feels like a second home, you know? Tucked away in St Albans, it's got this cosy, relaxed vibe that's perfect for meeting up with friends or family, whether you're settling in for a quiet pint or getting stuck into a pub quiz or watching the cricket on the telly. The staff are top-notch, always up for a chat and making sure everyone's sorted, and the food? Well, their Japanese-British fusion is a real standout – think mouthwatering ramen that's rich and moreish, paired with a brilliant range of drinks including gins with daily offers. It's moderately priced too, so you won't break the bank, and they've made booking a doddle through their website. On the flip side, though, the kitchen can be a bit sluggish at times; one chap mentioned waiting over half an hour for some simple grub, which might frustrate you if you're peckish and in a hurry. Overall, it's a solid choice for a night out, with that 4.2 rating speaking volumes about the good times had by most, but just keep in mind it shines brightest when you've got the time to linger.

Pros and Cons

Pros
  • The staff are absolutely brilliant – always friendly and welcoming, making you feel right at home as soon as you walk in.
  • The food is a real treat; their Japanese-British fusion dishes, like the delicious ramen, are spot on and full of flavour.
  • They've got a fantastic selection of drinks, including local and imported beers, wines, and a cracking variety of gins with some great offers throughout the week.
  • The atmosphere is lovely and relaxed, perfect for catching up with mates, with board games and darts to keep things fun.
  • It's got a great outside area for when the weather's nice, and plenty of screens for watching the footy or cricket.
  • They're spot on for events like pub quizzes and bingo, and you can easily book tables or even sort out parties with buffets.
Cons
  • The kitchen service can be a bit on the slow side sometimes, like waiting ages for simple things such as chicken strips and fries, which puts a damper on things.
  • While it's generally welcoming, a couple of visits might not live up to the hype if you're in a rush.

We recently visited this pub, and while the atmosphere was lively and inviting, and the staff were incredibly friendly, our experience was let down by the slow service from the kitchen. We ordered chicken strips and fries, expecting a quick bite, but ended up waiting 36 minutes—all because they were prioritising delivery orders. It was quite disappointing to hear that explanation, especially as we had initially considered ramen but chose chicken strips and fries for their shorter preparation time. In the end, it is just 3 pieces of chicken! I was tempted to rate the pub 2 stars, but thanks to the lovely staff and enjoyable atmosphere, I’m giving 3 stars overall. We’ll consider giving it another try in the future, hoping for better service from the kitchen.

Tucked away on a cosy side street in the heart of St Albans, The Beehive is a hidden gem serving up soul-warming ramen and a tempting selection of starters. The pork tonkotsu with spicy broth was delicious riich, velvety, and so unbelievably moreish that I could have happily bathed in it. Every spoonful was pure comfort. The ramen Scotch egg was an unexpected delight, with its crisp exterior giving way to a perfectly runny yolk. The cauliflower wings, while bursting with bold flavours, didn’t quite hit the spot for me, as I was craving something crispier and more indulgent. But that’s more about my expectations than the dish itself. Overall, the food was fantastic, and I’ll be back in a heartbeat when the next ramen craving hits!
